Months back, there was a shock in the gaming community when GameStop decided to shut down Game Informer, a long-standing editorial institution within the gaming world. The website vanished from the internet, leaving only physical magazine issues as traces of its existence. But, a few weeks ago, hints emerged from former Game Informer staff members about a possible return, with March 25th being mentioned as a potential date. Now that March 25th has arrived, it seems that Game Informer is back, with all its original staff and free from the ownership of GameStop.
On March 25, the Game Informer website resumed operation, noticeably before the Q4 2024 earnings report of GameStop. Matt Miller, the Editor-in-Chief, penned a letter to the readers detailing the reasons behind the unexpected revival. A significant reason for the comeback was a change in ownership. Gunzilla Games, a studio co-founded by Vlad Korolov, Alex Zoll, and Neill Blomkamp, acquired Game Informer from GameStop and has since transformed it into an independent entity.
Allow Miller’s Letter to the Editor to explain further:
What’s the story behind this development? The Gunzilla Games team, after establishing a connection with ours and expressing their interest, managed to acquire Game Informer. From the outset, the new proprietors were firm about Game Informer maintaining its independence as an editorial platform; they shared our belief that the best course of action was to have an editorially autonomous group that decided entirely on what content to produce and how to present it, free from any interference or control by them or others.
Game Informer functions under the company known as Game Informer Inc., and we remain committed to showcasing the most exciting games, honoring the rich history and tradition of the gaming world, and spotlighting the visionaries and enthusiasts who are shaping its future. I am profoundly grateful for the faith and energy demonstrated by Gunzilla Games’ team; they recognize the potential in Game Informer, just as we do, and their support for ethical decision-making and freedom from external influence is commendable.
After a sudden closure in August 2024, Game Informer is making its comeback. Over the past few years, GameStop had been impacting the publication through layoffs and a major restructuring of its management team. The closure led to staff redundancies, and GameStop took steps such as removing the magazine’s digital presence by shutting down social media accounts and erasing video archives. As part of this revival, the digital archives are back online, all accounts seem active once more, and the entire original team has been rehired. The monthly physical magazine is also set to make a return.
Information concerning Game Informer’s subscription and membership plans remains undisclosed at this time. Miller has hinted that more details will be shared in the coming weeks.
