Gambit Plot Details Revealed for Channing Tatum’s Axed X-Men Movie

Almost six years following the cancellation of the standalone Gambit film, actress Lizzy Caplan recently disclosed plot details regarding the upcoming X-Men spin-off starring Channing Tatum.

Initially planned in 2014, the Gambit solo film was intended for the X-Men movie universe under 20th Century Fox. Instead of reprising his role from X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Channing Tatum took on the character of Gambit, a beloved mutant capable of generating, managing, and manipulating pure kinetic energy. Despite Tatum’s reported dedication to making Gambit a successful superhero film, the project got stuck in development limbo and was ultimately terminated in May 2019 when Disney and Marvel Studios obtained the X-Men rights following their acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

What Gambit plot details were revealed?

Actress Sophie Caplan, who joined the Gambit cast in November 2017 as its female lead, shared her thoughts on the abandoned X-Men spin-off movie with Business Insider (via Variety). “It was an incredibly exciting concept,” she said. “It’s somewhat surprising that it didn’t proceed. Typically, those movies don’t get cancelled, but this one did.

Afterward, it was disclosed that Gambit would’ve paved a unique path within the X-Men series by introducing a superhero romantic comedy. “We were well on our way to filming it,” she said. “I believe there was a set date. I had discussions with Channing, and we had several other producers involved. The idea was to create a 1930s-style screwball romance within the X-Men universe, which would have been quite entertaining.

Initially, when Fox abandoned their X-Men Universe blueprint in 2019, Channing Tatum thought he wouldn’t get to play the mutant character, Gambit, on the silver screen. Yet, five years later, Tatum stepped into the role of Gambit in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool and Wolverine production, sharing scenes with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Although there are no confirmed plans for his reappearance, renowned insider Alex Perez suggests that Tatum’s Gambit might show up in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The X-Men movies, including Deadpool & Wolverine, are streaming on Disney+.
