The FromSoftware style is encapsulated by a well-known quote from Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Upon seeing an early, unrefined, and grotesque design for the Undead Dragon in Dark Souls, Miyazaki requested it to be more noble, stating, “Couldn’t you instead strive to express the profound sadness of a mighty creature destined for a slow and perhaps endless fall into decay?
At some stage, undoubtedly, there was a discussion hidden away about the perfect tune for Elden Ring Nightreign‘s launch trailer. This discussion culminated in an agreement that the hauntingly epic landscape of the Lands Between would be accentuated by a song reminiscent of the music often used in mid-2000s anime music videos (AMVs), where creators compile their favorite Berserk scenes.
As I watched the Elden Ring: Nightreign trailer, I was instantly taken back to 2003 with the familiar notes of “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence. Back then, this nu-metal tune felt a bit awkward, something we used to call ‘cringeworthy’ rather than just ‘cringe.’ But here I am, two decades later, and hearing it at a retro night made me realize that this song is actually awesome!
Bandai Namco, known for its impressive track record, recently unveiled a trailer for the Dark Souls soundtrack featuring folk-rock band The Silent Comedy. In contrast to today’s highly polished trailers often set to slowed-down covers, this one feels more homemade or DIY, which is refreshing. The slow march of the three heroes into battle during a tranquil part of Evanescence’s Bring Me to Life gives off an “us against the world” vibe that fits well with a game where teamwork will be crucial.
In his critique on Elden Ring Nightreign, Tyler Colp mentioned that the appearance of the Centipede Demon, a boss often forgotten from Dark Souls, caused an uproar in voice chat as it was swiftly defeated by 14 years worth of action RPG combat progression. When circumstances align, as they inevitably will, Nightreign offers a gaming experience unlike any other he’s encountered. Despite his comments on its complexity and disarray, it’s clear that he enjoyed the game thoroughly. He rated it 80 points.
In a similar vein, I might find myself humming “rescue me from this emptiness I now embody,” while seated at my workstation for the remainder of today.
