As a seasoned gamer with a decade-long affinity for all things Soulsborne, I must admit that the recent announcement of Elden Ring: Neightreign sends a shiver down my spine, not unlike the first time I encountered Sif, the faithful hound. The prospect of squaring off against iconic Dark Souls enemies in this new standalone co-op roguelike has me both exhilarated and apprehensive.
In the upcoming game titled “Elden Ring: Neightreign,” FromSoftware has confirmed that iconic adversaries from the original Dark Souls series will reappear. This is a separate cooperative title, classified as a roguelike game. Notably, assets from Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree are being repurposed for this new project. Additionally, FromSoftware plans to include a variety of enemies that were initially featured in their earlier creations.
Dark Souls crosses into Elden Ring: Neightreign
According to a conversation with Japanese news source Famitsu, director Junya Ishizaki affirmed that some adversaries from the Souls series will reappear in Elden Ring. Nevertheless, they won’t dominate the enemy roster significantly as only a limited number of enemies will be included.
During the interview, Ishizaki shared that they intend to reintroduce a limited selection of formidable adversaries, among them some highly recognized ones. To illustrate, imagine the return of Dark Souls 3’s Nameless King, perched majestically on a dragon, hurling bolts of lightning at the player.
It seems that the comeback of the Night King might be causing these well-known Souls enemies to cross into our world, merging them for what’s being called the “Neightreign”. Ishizaki clarified that this intermingling of worlds contributes to the “disorder” in the new roguelike game.
It seems that several enemies from Dark Souls II, such as The Duke’s Dear Freja boss creature, the Centipede Demon, and others, are set to return in the game. Regretfully, there is currently no indication that creatures from other FromSoft games, specifically Sekiro, will join them in this title. As for an Armored Core mech, it might be a bit too extravagant for this game.
How does this alter the lore?
It appears that FromSoftware is strongly suggesting a connection between Elden Ring and Dark Souls, hinting that their new game could rekindle the dying embers of the Souls series’ former glory. In a tweet from the developer, they stated: “In the dark of night, ancient adversaries lie in wait – echoes of a fire that once blazed fiercely.
It’s unclear exactly where this alternate universe falls within the larger narrative of Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and other FromSoftware games. Yet, with the game set to launch in 2025, we can anticipate a surge of in-depth analysis pieces similar to five-hour-long video essays, perhaps even more than ever before.
