From Passion to Resurrection: Mel Gibson’s Next Epic to Start Filming in August

Renowned director and actor Mel Gibson is preparing to initiate production on the much-anticipated continuation of his 2004 hit The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of Christ. This new film will delve into the resurrection of Jesus, a fundamental belief in Christianity, and is slated to commence shooting at Rome’s famous Cinecittà Studios in August.

Two decades after the release of “The Passion of the Christ,” a groundbreaking depiction of Jesus’ final hours that earned $612 million worldwide and ranks among the highest-grossing R-rated films ever made, Mel Gibson is set to revisit this sacred story with fresh determination. As reported by Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of Cinecittà Studios, the upcoming film, titled “The Resurrection of Christ, will be filmed entirely at Cinecittà starting in August.

In his discussion with Joe Rogan, Gibson outlined his concept for the sequel. He disclosed that the movie would delve into expansive spiritual realms, focusing on topics such as “the downfall of angels” and places like hell and Sheol. Gibson stated, “To truly portray this tale accurately, it’s crucial to begin with the fall of the angels.” He acknowledged that creating a narrative that avoids cliches while addressing such themes would be challenging but showed resolve: “It won’t be simple… But I’m willing to give it a try because that’s what needs to be done, isn’t it?

Jim Caviezel, who gave a stirring portrayal of Jesus in “The Passion,” is set to re-take his role. Since it’s been 20 years since the original movie came out, Gibson intends to employ digital de-aging methods to depict Caviezel as he looked back in 2004. Additionally, Maia Morgenstern (Mary) and Francesco De Vito (Saint Peter) are anticipated to rejoin the cast.

Gibson’s method of storytelling is consistently daring and intimately personal. In The Resurrection of the Christ, it appears he is ready to present yet another profound examination of divine mercy and salvation – a tale that strikes a chord with believers across the globe.
