From New Delhi to New York: Kartik Research Brings Its “Indian Future Vintage” to the US

On April 19th, the Delhi-based brand Kartik Research is set to debut its first physical store in the United States, which will be located in New York City’s Lower East Side on Orchard Street. By establishing a presence among other budding brands and vintage designer boutiques in this area, Kartik Research will become part of a vibrant neighborhood known for nurturing young talent.

In an interview with WWD, founder Kartik Kumra mentioned that New York has been our primary market since the beginning. Last year, we expanded by opening a store in Delhi, but this is our first major step into retail. During my time at college in Philly, I used to visit New York for weekends; I’ve been collaborating with Colbo, located nearby, for pop-ups since I was 20 years old. We’ve been working with them and several other local retailers in the city for a few years now.

Founded by Indian designer Kartik Kumra in 2021, Kartik Research has earned acclaim for its designs that blend traditional Indian heritage with the free-spirited styles of 20th century bohemian subcultures. This designer, who studied at a Pennsylvania university, advanced to become a semifinalist for the LVMH Prize in 2023.

Colbo, a retail store carrying various brands, served as an ideal location for Kartik Research’s previous pop-ups. Brands such as Cawley, SK Manor Hill, and Colbo’s in-house collection are carefully selected to feature neutral colors, spacious designs, and superior craftsmanship. Kumra’s unique, handcrafted garments, made in India, showcase earthy tones and traditional embellishments like tassels, embroidery, and intricate knits inspired by heritage motifs.

Located on 61 Orchard St, the space boasts the decidedly human sensibilities of the collection. Warm lighting illuminates the intimate space, and rustic natural materials are used in the seating and decor. Scattered throughout are authentic indian crafts, including metal vessels, sculptures, and paintings.
Starting tomorrow, April 19, the Kartik Research store will be open from 11-7pm EST.
