For several decades now, “Magic: The Gathering” has been recognized as one of the world’s pioneering and most beloved trading card games. Launched in 1993, it’s celebrating its 29th year. Exciting news! Hasbro has recently unveiled plans for a full-fledged “cinematic universe” surrounding this game. Here’s what we know so far:
A Bumpy Road To A Netflix Show
For quite some time, fans eagerly anticipating a cinematic universe for the game “Magic: The Gathering” have been patiently waiting. This wait began when Netflix announced a series adaptation of the games as far back as 2019… only to be met with disappointment when the project, overseen by the Russo brothers, directors of numerous MCU films, was cancelled in 2021.
However, in September 2024, Netflix revealed that they are indeed moving forward with an animated “Magic: The Gathering” show once more. This time, Terry Matalas will lead the project, and it will be a collaboration between Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast.

A Studio With A History Of Video Game Adaptations
It seems that the game’s fans will be receiving additional content, as Hasbro is collaborating with Legendary Pictures on a film based on the franchise. Notably, Legendary Pictures has previously worked on film adaptations of video games.
- Warcraft (2016)
- Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
- A Minecraft Movie (2025, upcoming)
- Street Fighter (2026, upcoming)
Indeed, it’s also true that the studio has achieved immense fame through blockbusters such as Christopher Nolan’s films and the Hangover series, among others. At present, there are several details about the project that remain undecided, particularly the identity of its director and the scheduled release date.
An Excited Team
It remains uncertain whether the forthcoming film and Netflix series share a common narrative or whether they present separate tales. However, what is clear is that those involved in the production are eager to be part of it.
Magic: The Gathering has inspired decades of epic world-building and creative storytelling. It is a perfect match for Legendary’s diversified approach to marquee IP, and we are excited to work together to build a whole new Magic: The Gathering universe.

Despite the limited details available about the forthcoming “Magic: The Gathering” cinematic universe, enthusiasts of the game can now eagerly anticipate some confirmed projects following a lengthy wait.
