Making up your mind about Sapdal in the game “Avowed” significantly impacts the direction of the story’s outcome. Although there are some gameplay adjustments, they aren’t as significant as the narrative shifts due to the substantial impact of this decision on the remainder of the game. The storyline of “Avowed” subtly questions your choice, but if you stay alert and complete the relevant side quests, the decision should become less challenging.
[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Avowed.]
Pondering your decision might be eased by unearthing all of Sapadal’s ancient memories, particularly the ones discovered in The Garden. These glimpses into their past will provide a more definitive image of the kind of deity they are and what potential outcomes you may face if you liberate them. In the game Avowed, many of your choices carry weight, but few have as much impact on the Living Lands’ future as this one. Although all options here could fit a specific playstyle, one seems more favorable if you’re having trouble deciding.
What Happens If You Kill Sapadal In Avowed
Killing Avowed Leads To Less Happy Endings
Destroying Sapadal has both short-term and long-term consequences, but I’d rather delve into the immediate impacts first to avoid any potential spoilers. If you decide to eliminate Sapadal, it will win you favor with the rival deity Woedica, granting you one of her Godlike abilities: Woedica’s Call. This ability empowers you to summon a potent Maegfolc ally to aid you in combat. The Maegfolc are the colossal robots you’ll encounter within The Garden prior to reaching Sapadal, offering a hint of what this summons might entail.
The act of destroying Sapadal influences the tone of the game’s closing scenes. In this role-playing game, the story’s aftermath is depicted through static images and a narration explaining events post-journey, much like in Obsidian Entertainment’s other action RPG, Fallout: New Vegas. The endings you receive for demolishing Sapadal subtly convey your indifference towards them, hinting at the liberties you now enjoy that they never had. Although these endings are not particularly negative, they do carry a touch of melancholy compared to those earned by liberating the imprisoned deity of nature.
If you opt to demolish Sapadal at the beginning, you can skip an encounter with a boss that precedes entering The Garden. During your conversation with Inquisitor Lödwyn in Galawain’s Tusks, you have the opportunity to disclose your intention to destroy Sapadal. If you do so, she will forgo engaging in combat with you, thus saving you both time and the initial effort of defeating her. However, it’s important to note that by choosing this option, you may miss out on some battle experience and loot from Lödwyn’s possessions. Engaging Lödwyn here will not prevent you from making the decision to destroy Sapadal later in The Garden.
What Happens If You Free Sapadal
Freeing Sapdal Creates A More Optimistic Future For The Living Lands
Freeing Sapadal in Avowed grants you a fresh Godlike power instead of Woedica’s Call. This newfound power is called Sapadal’s Fury – a spell that hoists surrounding adversaries and smashes them into the ground, inflicting substantial damage. Using this ability is extremely gratifying, particularly against hordes of enemies. However, some might say Woedica’s Call is slightly more potent. The advantage of having an extra ally for 45 seconds can offer several benefits such as taking damage, which can be crucial for classes with lower health like a Ranger, Wizard, or a hybrid Ranger/Wizard character build.
In terms of conclusions, choosing to liberate Sapadal results in more hopeful outcomes compared to annihilating it. These endings demonstrate that Sapadal is now free from the rage that led to the Dreamscourge outbreak and has found tranquility. The Envoy can continue their connection with the freed deity, and this ending indicates they are content with the companionship.
If you enable Sapadal to merge part of themselves with the Eothas statue during the Dawntreader quest, they will then traverse the land using the statue as a vessel. This results in some delightful depictions of Sapadal experiencing their newfound freedom and exploring the world, which is heartening to read about. It’s wonderful to witness this deity enjoying themselves after such a long period of confinement.
An additional approach to liberating Sapadal involves merging with them, effectively incorporating Sapadal into oneself. In this scenario, the Envoy assimilates Sapadal, eradicating any divine screens associated with the god since they no longer exist independently. However, by opting for this method, you’ll still acquire the power of Sapadal’s Fury.
You Should Free Sapadal In Avowed
There Is No Downside To Freeing Sapadal
In essence, choosing Sapadal over Woedica’s Call is generally more advantageous in Avowed’s final stage, although Woedica’s Call might be slightly superior for certain playstyles. However, the impact of this choice is likely to be minimal, as it didn’t significantly affect my ability to complete the game when I was under-leveled and lacking optimal gear. Unless you’ve missed out on all sidequests or are significantly underpowered, the power you select should have a negligible effect on your success in this final stage.
In the game “Avowed“, you’ll find more positive outcomes if you rescue Sapdal. If you’re after a happier storyline, then choosing to save them is your best bet. But if you’d rather experience a less joyful ending, you can opt to destroy the god instead. Generally speaking, unless you’re intentionally playing an evil character in the game, there seems little reason to make that choice.
