Forrest Gump’s Original Draft Included a Curious George Appearance, Says Robert Zemeckis

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more movies than I can count pixels, the revelation that Curious George was once slated to appear in Forrest Gump is nothing short of mind-boggling! It’s like someone telling me that Mario used to ride a dinosaur instead of Yoshi!

The original draft of Forrest Gump included an appearance from Curious George.

Under the guidance of director Robert Zemeckis, the movie “Forrest Gump” made its debut in U.S. cinemas in July 1994. Tom Hanks played the leading role, with Robin Wright portraying Jenny Curran, Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan Taylor, Mykelti Williamson as Benjamin Buford “Bubba” Blue, and Sally Field as Mrs. Gump rounding out the cast.

The movie “Forrest Gump” is based on the 1986 novel with the same title, penned by author Winston Groom. Eric Roth was responsible for writing the script.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tom Hanks revealed that the initial script by director Robert Zemeckis for Forrest Gump deviated significantly from the final version we know today.

Eric Roth’s initial script for ‘Forrest Gump,’ which was approximately 179 pages long, featured angels flying and dreamlike landscapes, as he explained.

What did Robert Zemeckis say about Curious George originally being in Forrest Gump?

In a disclosure, Zemeckis shared that initially, the character of Curious George, the cherished little monkey born from the minds of Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey who debuted in 1939’s Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys, was included in Roth’s initial script draft.

“Curious George was a cartoon monkey on Forrest’s shoulder talking to him,” he said.

Later on, Zemeckis mentioned that following his review of the script, he opted to exclude Curious George from the movie.

According to Zemeckis, they instructed him to find the individual responsible for directing “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” After reading the script for “Forrest Gump,” he expressed his enthusiasm for it, adding, “However, I’m not a fan of that monkey character.

When Wright inquired about Curious George’s absence from the film due to rights matters, Zemeckis clarified that this wasn’t the reason. Instead, he personally chose not to include Curious George in the movie.

Forrest Gump is currently streaming on Paramount+ and on Fubo.
