Embarking on a journey in an ancient land, I find myself at the heart of a burgeoning revolution. The once stable leadership is crumbling under the shadowy ambitions of a tyrant determined to seize power. However, there’s hope yet – a secretive order loyal to the Emperor holds the unique ability of Foresight, allowing them to mentally rehearse battles countless times until the best course of action becomes clear. As a fan, I find myself taking on this role in Forestrike, a roguelike martial arts action-melee game.
With the power of Foresight at my disposal, I’m prepared to face seemingly insurmountable odds and potentially save Yu’s nation from destruction. After trying an early version of this captivating game, I’m convinced that it holds a promising future.
A nation in turmoil
In a vaguely defined kingdom during the era of emperors and peasants, the nation teeters on the edge of collapse due to failing institutions and growing discontent among its citizens. To safeguard the realm, the Emperor summons a mysterious figure called The Admiral, who is known for his military prowess but also his cunning scheming. Unbeknownst to the Emperor’s scholars, this Admiral aims to exploit the kingdom’s weaknesses and seize power. As the empire falters, he incites thugs, bandits, and restless citizens to join his rebellion, calling for a complete overthrow of the monarchy. The unrest spreads even to remote monasteries where an order of monks devoted to the Emperor dwell. When the Admiral’s minions launch an assault on the monastery, perceiving it as a threat, a monk named Yu decides to employ their ancient powers and defend their home.
As a skilled gamer embarking on an epic martial arts adventure, I find myself part of an order known as the Order of the Foresight. This extraordinary group has the power to envision various outcomes of events before they happen and strategize accordingly. In this game, my mission is to traverse different locations shown on a map that ultimately leads me to the formidable Admiral. Along the way, I encounter his numerous minions, each requiring a fierce battle.
Each stop presents a new challenge with an increasing number of formidable opponents. The usual odds would seem insurmountable, but thanks to my Foresight, I can visualize each fight in my mind before engaging in the real one. This unique ability gives me an edge, allowing me to strategize and adapt, ultimately increasing my chances of success.
Forestrike is a game with an impressive pixelated style, showcasing a grim, war-torn nation as the backdrop for its combat sequences. As you progress towards the Admiral, the seamless dance of battle becomes a spectacle to behold, mastering Foresight making each clash even more exhilarating.
The game allows replay functionality, enabling players to assess their performance or practice specific battles by duplicating their code. With various encounter variations, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to hone your skills.
What stood out for me was the diverse soundtrack that ranged from dramatic to funky, evoking memories of classic kung-fu films and series. This added an extra layer of enjoyment when I choreographed a visually stunning fight against opponents.
From many paths, one true way forward
Forestrike is back, offering an exciting blend of roguelike gameplay and brawling action! Throughout your journey, you’ll pick various destinations on the map which offer enticing rewards like combat techniques, gold for unique items, healing options, and upgrades to enhance your abilities. However, each destination usually involves a fight against numerous opponents. Receive damage in these battles, and it persists throughout your playthrough or until you acquire healing techniques or special items that can alleviate your condition.
It’s great to have Foresight at our disposal! As detailed earlier, the Order of Foresight has the ability to mentally rehearse battles before they occur. In game terms, this translates to the option to engage in a pre-battle simulation with a simple click. This allows you to anticipate your opponents’ moves and counterattacks using various strategies such as light and heavy attacks or unconventional weapons like brooms and tables within the room.
Additionally, you can dodge their attacks or misdirect them by making them fight each other. Your enemies have unique characteristics that need to be understood, such as those who evade attacks, throw projectiles, or take hits and retaliate. Forestrike offers practice to help you adapt to these idiosyncrasies, and you can simulate the battle multiple times to find the most efficient and cost-effective approach to victory.
Regardless of how many times you practice the battle using Foresight, you’ll eventually have to face the actual fight. Even then, you might stumble and receive an unintended injury on your path to ultimate success. There’s always a risk that your journey could end abruptly due to unexpected events. Any blow you take or deviation from your predicted course will add to the chaos, and being completely defeated means you’ll have to start over from the beginning where Yu sees your defeat as a grand (or perhaps disappointing) Foresight vision. Despite the advantage Forestrike offers, this game can become incredibly tough, quickly, but it also presents a rewarding challenge.
One aspect that caught my attention in the sneak peek was the ability to pick a master in Forestrike, which determines the type of skills you’ll acquire during gameplay. In our version, only the Leaf school was accessible. This school focused on techniques such as evasion and misdirection, often guiding enemies to attack each other instead of requiring you to throw numerous punches. For instance, there was an option where you could reverse your opponent mid-attack, causing them to fight their own allies. It appears that there are four more combat schools to be discovered, each with unique specialties, and I’m eager to see how they differ from the Leaf school.
In countless predicted failures, one ultimate victory
In Forestrike, the game’s concept offers an engaging twist on the typically tough ordeal of roguelike survival games. Although you can rehearse extensively, true triumph must still be achieved, and defeating certain enemy configurations required swift responses, even after multiple successful attempts in Foresight. The pixel art and catchy soundtrack effectively create a distinctive and edgy martial arts movie atmosphere. I’m eager to explore how the other combat schools fare, as I anticipate replaying Forestrike frequently if they’re as intriguing as the Leaf school proved to be, with numerous playstyles leading us towards victory along various routes.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of getting an early peek at the PC edition of the upcoming game, Forestrike. Exciting news for all us gamers, it’s not just limited to PC; this action-packed adventure will also be available on the Nintendo Switch!
