Following Khalid Rahman, Minnal Murali cinematographer Sameer Thahir booked in hybrid ganja case; granted bail

On May 5, 2025, renowned Malayalam cinematographer Sameer Thahir was taken into custody by Excise officials. His arrest came a week after Khalid Rahman and Ashraf Hamza were apprehended, with Thahir being charged in connection to those incidents.

Based on a report from Mathrubhumi, it was discovered that the hybrid marijuana belonging to Khalid and Ashraf was present in Thahir’s apartment. Following his interrogation, the cinematographer was then officially detained and placed under arrest.

In a thrilling turn of events, I found myself charged under Section 25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, due to my alleged involvement in drug-related activities involving premises under my control. However, after some time, I was granted bail at the station, keeping alive the hope that justice will prevail and my love for the subject matter remains unshaken.

It’s worth noting that Khalid Rahman, the filmmaker behind Thallumaala, was taken into custody by the police due to his possession of a hybrid form of marijuana, specifically 1.63 grams of cannabis. After their arrests, both Rahman and Ashraf Hamza were granted bail following the incident.

Previously, Jimshi Khalid, the brother of Khalid Rahman, shared a photo featuring his sibling, accompanied by the caption, “Thank you for adding fuel to the fire; it’s going to blaze more intensely than ever before! #godspeed.” This post generated considerable discussion among online users, with opinions split over their responses.

Based on various sources, the initial post, which allowed comments, garnered endorsement from numerous celebrities. Notable figures such as Naslen, Lukman Avaran, Sreenath Bhasi, actress Anagha Ravi, among others, expressed their approval. Additionally, it’s been reported that the caption of the image was modified, and the original version is said to have contained a derogatory term related to race.
