As a gamer with a deep appreciation for horror movies, I must say that the interpretation of Midsommar’s ending by Florence Pugh adds another layer of intrigue to this already captivating film. Having played numerous psychological thriller video games, I can relate to the idea of a character experiencing a psychotic break and the subsequent confusion it brings about.
Five years after Ari Aster’s movie “Midsommar” was first shown in cinemas in 2019, Florence Pugh has shared a unique perspective on the enigmatic and debated conclusion of the folk horror film.
The critically acclaimed horror feature, which remains one of Aster’s most highly regarded films, follows an American couple (Pugh’s Dani and Jack Reynor’s Christian) as they get drawn into an enigmatic cult at a remote village in Sweden during a midsummer festival.
In the movie’s climax, I find myself standing as the May Queen, adorned in a flowery gown and a regal crown. As I beam with pride, my beloved Christian, cloaked in bear fur, is set ablaze as the village’s offering. The final frame captures me smiling, while the horrifying spectacle of his sacrificial death unfolds before my eyes.
What was Florence Pugh’s take on Midsommar’s ending?
In a video posted by WIRED, actors Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield responded to some of the internet’s most frequently asked questions. Among these, Pugh discussed her perspective on the film ‘Midsommar,’ stating that it differs from director Ari Aster’s interpretation.
According to Pugh, there’s an alternative interpretation compared to Ari [Aster], the director. In this version, the character experiences a mental breakdown. When she inadvertently causes Christian, her boyfriend, to be burned, she starts having recurring episodes where she seems to fall back into this psychological distress.
She went on to say, “When the final scene arrives with everything ablaze, I aimed to capture the essence of me at age five during Bonfire Night, feeling the thrill of flames. I wanted to revert back to a minimalist lifestyle where small, ordinary things evoke the same joy in children that they did for me. Since I assumed she was no longer present in that moment.
