In the game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, deciding where to go initially can be tricky due to its open-ended nature. Once you exit the Imperial Sewers and finish the tutorial, the game allows you to chart your own course and shape your destiny as desired.
In the beginning of Oblivion Remastered, it’s advisable for players to visit two specific spots initially – Vilverin and Sideways Cave, which are situated beside the Imperial Sewer. However, the order in which you proceed next is largely dependent on your objectives within the game.
Regardless if you prefer the primary storyline, wish to take on side missions, join guilds, or set off on a journey tailored to you, there are numerous destinations to explore first in this eagerly anticipated reboot.
Cross The River & Enter Vilverin
An Ayleid Ruin Inhabited By Bandits
Upon leaving the Imperial Sewers, your first sight will be the Ayleid ruin of Vilverin, located on the other side of the river to the east. While Ayleid Ruins are common in Cyrodiil, this particular one is hard to miss as you transition out of the tutorial zone.
In this specific Ayleid Ruin, you’ll encounter a couple of bandits posted as lookouts. Either take care of them before proceeding, or steer clear and venture into Vilverin, where you’ll find more bandits and a wealth of treasures, including a heap of Welkynd Stones that can replenish your Magicka.
Go South To Find Sideways Cave
A Cave Full Of Loot & Imps

For players of the remastered version of Oblivion, a recommended initial dungeon to explore is the Sideways Cave. After exiting the Imperial Sewers, take a right and ascend the hill. You’ll find Sideways Cave there. Dispatch the solitary Imp outside before venturing in to discover a surprisingly extensive network of tunnels leading to an underground lake.
Should you venture into Vilverin and Sideways Cave initially in Oblivion Remastered, players will notice substantial advancement in their character levels, and will grow accustomed to the game’s updated mechanics.
Head To Weynon Priory
Start The Oblivion Main Quest Southeast of Chorrol
In the primary quest of “Oblivion”, Weynon Priory serves as your initial destination. Once you obtain the Amulet of Kings, Emperor Uriel VII instructs you to deliver it to Joffre, who is the leader of The Blades. You can find Joffre within Weynon Priory, located in the south of Chorrol and nestled in the northwestern part of the map.
Reaching this spot offers two options: You could opt for a scenic route by circumnavigating the Imperial City from the northern path, or you might prefer to instantaneously teleport straight to your destination using the fast-travel system. Initially, your character is familiar with key locations from the game’s opening scene, and you’re free to use the fast-travel feature to get to most significant settlements whenever you wish.
Join One Of The Many Oblivion Factions
The Fighter’s Guild, Mage’s Guild, Thieves Guild, And Dark Brotherhood
In the game ‘Oblivion Remastered’, there are multiple key groups you can become a part of once you locate a recruiter, or if you meet certain prerequisites for membership.
- In most major cities, you will find local Mage’s Guild and Fighter’s Guild chapters. Head into these locations and talk with the local guildmaster to join up.
- To join the Thieves Guild, you must commit a crime and go to jail, become friendly with any Beggar NPC to learn about the Thieves’ Guild existence, or learn about The Grey Fox and investigate on your own.
- To join the Dark Brotherhood, you must kill any innocent NPC and then go to sleep, when you will be contacted by the Speaker of the Night Mother, Lucien Lachance.
- The Imperial Arena is found in the Imperial City, and if you talk to Owyn, the Blademaster of the Arena, you can become an Arena combatant. Look for Owyn in the Bloodworks, to the left of the entrance to the Arena.
Pick Up Side Quests In Major Settlements…
Ask NPCs About “Rumors” To Find Side Quest Leads
One of the charming features that makes “Oblivion” stand out is its array of optional missions, or side quests. Unlike some games where you’re compelled to stick to the main storyline, in “Oblivion”, you have the freedom to bypass the main plot entirely if you wish. Instead, you can dedicate your time to pursuing these side quests and exploring at your leisure.
To discover side missions in Oblivion Remastered, players need to identify particular Non-Player Characters (NPCs) to converse with, explore specific locations, or gather information about “Rumors” from NPCs. Different regions will supply tips for distinct side quests, so always remember to inquire within any new area you enter to ensure you don’t miss out on the various side missions this game offers.
…Or Just Head In A Direction & See What You Find
Choose Your Own Path – Literally

One standout feature of the game Oblivion lies in its emphasis on giving players a high degree of autonomy and decision-making flexibility. Essentially, it allows you to bypass the main storyline at will, avoid side quests altogether if desired, and even eliminate non-essential characters. The beauty of this game is that there’s always something new to discover, almost everywhere you turn – and the freedom to decide your own course of action, from the sequence in which you tackle tasks, to the paths you choose, is all yours.
If you’re not keen on adhering to any of the recommendations for starting points in the remastered version of “Oblivion,” feel free to disregard them! Instead, choose a path or an intriguing location that catches your eye and venture towards it. Create your own objectives within the game, immerse yourself in role-playing, and carve out a journey that resonates with you – you might be pleasantly surprised by how this game encourages and rewards your freedom to explore and make choices as you see fit.
