First Look At “Silent Hill f”: Survival Horror Meets 1960s Japan

Following our earlier sneak peek into the upcoming chapter of the Silent Hill franchise, fresh details such as a new trailer and launch date have been unveiled during the “State of Play”. So, what exciting features can we anticipate in this game?

Back To Japan

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement for the upcoming release of “Silent Hill f“, the latest addition to the chilling horror game franchise. This time around, the action is set in the haunting backdrop of 1960s Japan, offering a refreshing twist from its predecessors.

From what we’ve seen in trailers so far, it seems that our protagonist is a girl named Hinako Shimizu. In the game, she mysteriously ends up in Ebisugaoka, a town eerily similar to Kanayama. Here, she must navigate through hordes of gruesome monsters and twisted creatures.

The game’s narrative remains shrouded in mystery, adding to the suspense and horror that has always been a staple of the Silent Hill series. I can hardly wait to uncover its secrets!

It’s clear that the focus will revolve around themes such as friendship, betrayal, and resolution of past issues. This is hinted at through the gameplay trailers, although they have been translated to understand better.

“100% Japanese Horror”

It seems that Konami grew more and more uneasy about the expanding popularity of their game series among Western gamers. To ensure a purely Japanese horror experience, they turned to renowned Japanese author Ryukishi07, known for his visual novels in Japan. They believed that someone with a deep understanding of Japanese horror would be ideal for the project. The game’s concept revolves around the idea of “beauty in horror,” suggesting that when something is overly beautiful and perfect, it can become profoundly unsettling.

According to Ryukishi07, female characters have historically experienced much hardship. However, this game aspires to break that trend: Ryukishi07 intends to develop a heroine, Hinako Shimizu, who writes her own destiny rather than just being led by it.

Typical Silent Hill: Bloody And Brutal

Despite some concerns about the game’s intensity, we aim to maintain the essence of Silent Hill: the struggle between guilt, discontentment, and inner turmoil. To keep things consistent, Akira Yamaoka, who has handled sound design in previous Silent Hill games, is once again involved. The monstrous creatures, grisly scenes, and gory imagery are all characteristic of the series. In the trailers, we see figures pieced together, organs missing, and, naturally, abundant blood. However, some players wonder just how graphic the game will ultimately be.

Currently, it’s been established that the game titled “Silent Hill f” carries a CERO Z rating in Japan, implying it cannot be sold to minors. In Europe, it receives a PEGI 18 classification, while in America, the ESRB assigns it a Mature rating, suggesting it’s suitable for individuals aged 17 and above.

Banned In Australia?

Due to its initial rejection by the Australian classification board (effectively a ban), the game temporarily made headlines for another reason: Australia’s strict regulations on video game content often lead to games being released in heavily censored versions, if they are released at all within the country.

Turns out, I’d gotten things all wrong. The higher-ups themselves clarified that the game I’d been playing was under review, and they promptly took it off the grid.

The question now arises as to how this game, which portrays themes such as gender bias, child maltreatment, harassment, drug-fueled delusions, torment, and intense brutality, will receive its age or content rating.

The video game “Silent Hill” is scheduled for release on September 25, 2025. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games, and the Microsoft Store.

What do you think? Are you already looking forward to the somewhat different Silent Hill?
