Fenix, Rotterdam’s Art Museum of Migration, Is Now Open

The much-awaited debut of FENIX is finally upon us, welcoming visitors to an engaging examination of migration via modern art perspectives. Nestled in the vibrant Katendrecht district along the city’s waterfront, this museum revitalizes a historic 16,000-square-meter warehouse, infusing it with fresh vitality.

As a fan, I can’t help but be thrilled about the stunning museum design spearheaded by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects. This is their first European cultural project, and it’s a testament to the brilliance of their Beijing-based studio. The architectural marvel, named “Tornado,” is a double-helix staircase that stretches from ground level to the roof, transitioning into a viewing platform offering breathtaking panoramic views of Rotterdam. Additionally, there’s Plein, a spacious 2,275-square-meter indoor square, which will be a versatile venue for various public events and community gatherings. Simply put, this architectural gem promises to be a vibrant hub for culture and community interaction.

In the world of art, Fenix is debuting simultaneously with three exhibitions:

1. The All Directions exhibit showcases over 150 acquisitions and new commissions from a diverse group of artists worldwide, focusing on personal and familial stories.
2. The Family of Migrants delves into the theme of migration using photography, displaying nearly 200 pieces from 55 different countries, combining documentary, portraiture, and photojournalist archives.
3. Lastly, The Suitcase Labyrinth offers a massive, immersive installation made up of approximately 2,000 donated suitcases, each one a unique artifact of culture and community.

Each exhibition provides a distinct perspective on various aspects of human experiences and stories.

The narratives of migration are the lifeblood of Fenix Museum, and they’re intertwined throughout every aspect,” expressed museum director Anne Kremers. “Our aim is to create a welcoming environment for all.
