FDA Labels Walmart Chicken Broth as ‘Class II’ Risk

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration, commonly referred to as the FDA, has issued a new statement concerning the classification under which the Treehouse Foods’ chicken broth sold at Walmart falls, following their recall of over 2,000 units due to problems with the packaging.

Here is what the FDA revealed in a recent statement about the recall.

FDA provides update on Walmart chicken broth

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a new development concerning the classification of the withdrawal of the Great Value Chicken Broth, initially taken off the shelves at Walmart.

According to the latest information, Treehouse Foods has categorized the withdrawal of their chicken broth under Class II. This category, as described on the FDA’s website, pertains to situations where using or being exposed to the affected product might lead to temporary or reversible health issues, or in cases where the risk of severe health complications is relatively low.

In the FDA’s most recent report about the product, it was noted that an update existed. On December 11, 2024, the federal agency chose to retrieve approximately 2,023 instances of Great Value Chicken Broth, totaling over 12,000 boxes. This decision was made following their announcement of packaging problems with this broth. The product in question was manufactured by Treehouse Foods, a company based in British Columbia, Canada.

The report’s details indicate that a family case containing six units was delivered to Walmart, where each unit was a 48-ounce broth carton made from Aseptic paper. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explained the reason for recalling this product as a possible packaging flaw, which might jeopardize the product’s sterility, leading to spoilage.

In response to the recall, Walmart also spoke up, stating their concern for customer health and safety. They quickly acted to pull out all affected products from some of their stores as soon as they were informed about the issue. The recall was actually initiated in a total of 242 stores spread across the United States.
