As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia when Atari announces another revival of their classic IP. I remember the thrill of playing Fatal Run on my trusty old Atari 7800, navigating through the post-apocalyptic wasteland in my combat-modded vehicle. The news that Fatal Run 2089 is now being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and will be released on modern consoles has me more excited than a teenager at his first concert!
In a fresh development, Atari is planning to revive another of its iconic franchises through Fatal Run 2089, a new game. The initial Fatal Run was launched in 1990 for the Atari 7800, where players controlled a battle-enhanced vehicle in a high-speed dash through a post-apocalyptic world with the objective of saving the last remnants of humanity. The upcoming Fatal Run 2089 expands upon this concept, using Unreal Engine 5 and the expertise of MNSTR Studio. It’s set to release on Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in the approaching future.
In a trailer released this week, Atari and MNSTR Studio unveiled the specifics of Fatal Run 2089. The game appears visually stunning and pulse-pounding, maintaining the breakneck speed vehicle combat from its predecessor while players navigate through expansive apocalyptic landscapes in heavily armed vehicles. It seems that the runs in Fatal Run will offer multiple options for paths and shortcuts, enhancing replay value. Players can also select from several cars tailored to various aspects such as speed, firepower, armor, and more, as they rush to transport essential supplies to human outposts amidst the apocalypse.
In the past, Fatal Run was a strong choice for a game on the Atari 7800. It’s not surprising then that Atari is returning to its old library of games, given their recent announcement of the Atari 7800+ console, which combines the classic design of the original with an updated format capable of playing both Atari 2600 and 7800 games. Interestingly, Atari also continues to develop modern versions of its classic titles, as demonstrated by Berzerk: Recharged and the upcoming Yars Rising.
At this time, we haven’t announced a release date for Fatal Run 2089, but keep an eye out for updates on our Atari channel, where you can find them exclusively on Shacknews.
