In 2005 and 2007, Julian McMahon, known for playing Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four and its sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, has expressed approval for Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024 that Downey Jr., who previously portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man in the franchise, will reprise his role as Doctor Doom.

At the SXSW 2025 event, the actor known for Nip/Tuck made an appearance to publicize his film titled The Surfer. During this occasion, he voiced his approval for Robert Downey Jr.’s role in the upcoming adaptation of Doctor Doom, demonstrating his backing for the renowned actor.
In a conversation with Screen Rant, Julian McMahon expressed admiration for Robert Downey Jr’s impressive acting career, labeling him as “extremely gifted.” He further mentioned, “It’s always a pleasure to see his performances on screen.
Pondering over the Fantastic Four films he was involved with, McMahon contemplated that they were on the brink of all the action unfolding. He admitted that they had a lot to navigate and determine where the first movie belonged, both in terms of its genre and the tone it should convey.
Actor McMahon, from Marvel’s Runaways (aired on Hulu from 2017-2019), emphasized the transformations in the superhero genre over the past 15 years or so. “With numerous ways to approach these stories now, you can really explore a lot of different directions,” he stated, adding that he believed Robert Downey Jr. would be exceptional as Doctor Doom.
