A fresh hypothesis posits that the movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” could offer a fresh perspective on one of Marvel’s most renowned antagonists. Some fans believe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s portrayal of Galactus might share a more substantial link with the Fantastic Four than initially thought, possibly intertwining with the movie’s broader narrative about multiple universes.
Fantastic Four theory suggests Franklin Richards and Galactus are the same
A widely held idea from the trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps points towards Galactus potentially being an older version of Franklin Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This film hints at both Galactus’ debut in the MCU and Sue Storm becoming pregnant, which could mean that Franklin will soon appear. In Marvel Comics, Franklin is the son of Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) and The Invisible Woman (Sue Storm), and he has immense psychic and reality-altering abilities.
According to this theory, Franklin is said to journey through time disguised as Galactus to obliterate Earth, erasing his earlier self who could challenge him. This coincides with the timeline of Sue’s pregnancy, suggesting that Franklin may have manipulated events to ensure his past actions would not lead to conflict with his future self.
Additionally, it matches up with Franklin’s demonstrated time-travel skills from the comics and his possible transformation into a cosmic menace. In the Earth X narrative, Franklin Richards instead takes on the role of Galactus, erasing his own memories and devouring planets inhabited by unborn Celestials.
In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” Ralph Ineson takes on the role of Galactus, while Julia Garner embodies the revamped Silver Surfer, Shalla-Bal. Additionally, in the comics-inspired storyline Earth X, Shalla-Bal functions as a herald for Franklin-Galactus, lending credence to the theory’s origins in comic books.
Including time travel as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storyline could represent a significant change in direction. Although Avengers: Endgame featured alternate timelines, this theory proposes a more straightforward form of time travel enabled by Franklin’s abilities. If proven correct, Franklin’s character development might mirror that of Wanda Maximoff, another powerful mutant who transitioned from an ally to an adversary in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Matt Shakman, the director, affirmed that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will directly tie into Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. In these stories, it’s anticipated that Franklin’s powers will be instrumental in preserving the stability of the multiverse. His character’s debut as both a hero and an antagonist could potentially influence the direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Phase Six.
On July 25, 2025, the movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” hits theaters, featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach portraying Marvel’s original family.
