A special rock called Jennifer was used as The Thing’s stand-in on Fantastic Four set

Matt Shakman recently discussed their production methods, sharing that they utilized a stone they called Jennifer as a prop for The Thing in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. They combined CGI and performance capture with Ebon Moss-Bachrach to create the on-screen Thing. Interestingly, the stone named Jennifer was also employed during the process.

In simpler terms, the director shared with Empire that they ventured into the desert and discovered a rock that perfectly matched their vision of The Thing. This rock was used as a stand-in for The Thing in every scene it appeared in the film, under all different lighting conditions.

Additionally, Ebon Moss-Bachrach shared his perspective on his character, The Thing (also known as Ben Grimm). He explained, “It’s quite a lot to consider that hundreds of people are contributing to animate this character. I trusted they would enhance my performance. I’m extremely satisfied with how Ben appears on screen.

Moreover, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who played The Punisher, expressed a sense of affinity towards the Thing because they both originated from New York. He also discussed the Thing’s connection with creator Jack Kirby. Moss-Bachrach remarked, “He’s a man of the Lower East Side. Much of this character was a tribute to his father, and that resonates deeply with me.

Meanwhile, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is all set to come to theaters next month on July 25.
