Fans of hip-hop legend Lauryn Hill have expressed their reactions following her performance at the 2025 Essence Festival of Culture, which took place in an almost deserted stadium. Not only was her appearance on stage delayed significantly beyond the scheduled time, but she ultimately wrapped up her set close to 3:37 AM.
Lauryn Hill performs in nearly-empty stadium till 3:37 am
On July 4, 2025, Lauryn Hill performed at the Essence Festival of Culture in Louisiana, sharing the stage with a number of other famous artists such as GloRilla, the Isley Brothers, Babyface, Maxwell, and a surprise addition, Coco Jones.
Nonetheless, Hill performed onstage with only a handful of spectators left due to unforeseen setbacks that disrupted previous acts’ performances. For example, GloRilla concluded her show while the Isley Brothers were still performing, and Maxwell stepped onto the stage slightly past midnight, adding more delay to Hill’s appearance (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter).
It appears that Hill, known for her tardiness on television shows, has sparked heated discussions online after her show in a largely empty stadium in New Orleans. The majority of comments seem to support Hill, shifting the blame towards the event organizers.

This wasn’t her fault at all.” Another supporter spoke up in support of Hill, stating, “We’re accustomed to Lauryn Hill running late, but the whole day was delayed…This was due to the organizers and scheduling issues, not Ms. Lauryn Hill herself.” A third fan emphasized the delay in the performance before commenting, “If I were Lauryn Hill, I’d be upset with Essence for this is completely unacceptable.
Instead of spreading rumors, let’s share the truth about the situation. It can be quite misleading to get Lauryn Hill trending with inaccurate stories. The entire festival had to be postponed, and it wasn’t her fault. In fact, I would have left myself if I were in her shoes, regardless of the contract. See you!

The Essence Festival recently responded to questions about Hill’s performance through an Instagram post, explaining that it wasn’t Monica’s fault she performed before a sparse audience because she arrived on time.
