Fans Are Enraged After Seeing The Trailer For The New Until Dawn Movie Adaptation

Fans are fuming after seeing the trailer for the new Until Dawn movie adaptation. Here’s why:

A Popular Game Gets A Controversial Adaptation

In 2015, the survival horror game titled “Until Dawn“, which resembled an interactive movie, became incredibly popular upon its release. It seemed as though every game creator couldn’t get enough of it, frequently playing it more than once to explore various decision-making paths.

More recently, there has been renewed interest in the game, with a 2024 remaster offering enhanced graphics, a revamped and immersive opening sequence, and even an alternate conclusion. However, the remaster isn’t the sole factor behind its resurgence. A film adaptation is also on the horizon, set to debut in April 2025.

The issue at hand? It appears that the movie trailer has little resemblance to the video game. To start with the cast, only Peter Stormare is returning from the original, yet his role isn’t the same as in the game. Despite it being exciting to see such a renowned actor back, it seems he won’t be portraying the character he played in the source material.

It makes sense that the rest of the characters have been replaced since both the game and the movie are meant to have young adult actors. However, what concerns fans most is that the movie doesn’t seem to be making an effort to replicate the original characters with a fresh cast. Instead, it appears to be introducing entirely new main characters.

As a devoted fan, I must admit that what sets this film apart is its entirely fresh storyline. Frankly, at some point, it feels like the movie veers away from the original video game. It’s quite possible that the challenge in adapting the game into a movie lies in the fact that “Until Dawn,” the video game, was designed to be an interactive slasher movie in itself. Intriguingly, it wasn’t just any movie; it was an immersive, interactive slasher experience.

In Need Of A New Concept

In essence, slasher films represent a distinctive horror subcategory, as they often share a similar fundamental storyline: A band of young individuals, usually teenagers or young adults, venture to a secluded area and encounter a perilous predicament that leaves them struggling to contact help from outside. As the characters meet their untimely ends, either no one manages to survive or there is one main character, commonly referred to as the “final girl”, who manages to escape unscathed.

In the game “Until Dawn,” it cleverly manipulates familiar tropes. A group of young adults venture to a remote winter lodge, their safety jeopardized as they’re forced to endure the night until morning for rescue to come. Interestingly enough, this is when help is expected (you got it!). As for a small hint, each character may live or perish, but Sam is the quintessential survivor who makes it through till the finale, with the exception of meeting an untimely end in one of the closing scenes.

Despite its adherence to a typical slasher plot, the game’s popularity might stem from the fact that players are not mere spectators, but have the role of ensuring the characters’ survival. The game operates on the principle known as the “butterfly effect,” where your choices shape the direction of the game.

Originally, the game Until Dawn was unique because it combined a tired movie plot with interactivity, which made it intriguing for players. However, since it’s being turned into a movie, the interactive aspect is no longer applicable, effectively removing the factor that set it apart from other films. Consequently, a fresh idea or concept became necessary to make the movie appealing and distinguish it from its predecessor.

The movie’s trailer tells us what this new concept is:

Could you manage to stay awake till dawn? The movie “@UntilDawn_Movie” will be available only in theaters starting April 25th. #UntilDawnMovie

In the movie “Until Dawn,” the characters find themselves trapped in a recurring scenario, where they meet their demise in various ways each day. This allows the film to delve into diverse horror genres such as slasher and body horror. Their goal is to break this loop before the 13th iteration, or else their lives will be permanently terminated. However, some fans of the game argue that it seems less like a faithful adaptation of “Until Dawn” and more like a horror take on the movie “Groundhog Day.

An Angry Community

A key element from the video game “Until Dawn” is set to feature in the upcoming movie, but beware, if you’re not familiar with the game’s entire storyline, this could potentially spoil it for you. The monstrous wendigo, a central antagonist in the game, will make an appearance within one of the time loops depicted in the film. However, aside from this connection, the movie boasts a completely separate plot, which has sparked numerous upset reactions on YouTube, with comments like:

This isn’t Until Dawn. I doubt the writers even looked, or even had a TASTE of the actual game, cause I’ve never seen an adaptation butchered, so horribly.

“Nobodys made it past 13 nights”
Ngl 13 Nights would have been a better title because this isn’t Until Dawn
– @ElasticGoblin

Until dawn: A game where one’s choices are irreversible
This movie: REWIND TIME

It appears that the primary concern among viewers is not about the quality of the movie itself, but rather the misleading title. The movie is labeled as an “Until Dawn” adaptation, yet it seems to have a very different storyline compared to the original game.
