After Donald Trump‘s inauguration as president, it was noticed that Facebook and Instagram users were experiencing an unusual occurrence. They found themselves automatically subscribing to official pages related to the new administration, such as Trump’s page and others. Although Meta has acknowledged this situation, some users are expressing their feelings of annoyance and puzzlement about the incident.
Here is what happened.
Meta users complain about following Donald Trump automatically
After Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President, I found myself mysteriously subscribed to official pages related to his administration – the President himself, Vice President JD Vance, and First Lady Melania Trump. It was all quite unexpected, and I wasn’t alone in my surprise; complaints started popping up on social media platforms like Reddit, where users shared their confusion about these unwanted subscriptions. Some of us claimed we had never followed these accounts but found ourselves linked to them after the change of administration.
The original message read: “I just stopped following him because I wasn’t following him initially. I even blocked him, but still saw his posts and then unfollowed as well. I hope this will help. I’m downloading the data to delete the app, so it won’t make much difference soon.”
“I didn’t follow him in the first place, but I still blocked him and saw his posts. After that, I decided to unfollow as well. I hope this action will have some effect. In the meantime, I’m downloading my data to delete the app, so it won’t matter for long.
Since the transition, Meta has been transparent in explaining that managing accounts associated with the White House is a standard procedure when a new president takes office. Essentially, they stated that the current administration usually oversees these accounts. Consequently, anyone who followed these pages under the previous president will continue to do so post-transition. (As a fan, I appreciate their transparency and commitment to maintaining continuity on their platform.)
Amidst the ongoing debate, Instagram users have been encountering a “sensitive content” alert when they search for hashtags such as #democrats, #berniesanders, and #joebiden. In contrast, searches using Republican-related terms like #donaldtrump did not prompt this warning. Meta’s spokesperson, Andy Stone, addressed the issue, explaining that it was due to some technical issues. He assured that the team was actively working to correct the problem.
The event has sparked concerns, particularly following Mark Zuckerberg’s recent adjustments to policies, such as eliminating fact-checking mechanisms.
