As a long-time racing game enthusiast and someone who has witnessed the evolution of these games over the years, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement when I hear about the commitment to improve crowds in F1 games. For years, we fans have been speeding past hordes of indistinguishable spectators, barely registering their presence as we focus on the thrill of the race. But with the advent of 8K graphics and increasingly realistic gameplay, even the smallest details are becoming more noticeable.
In racing games, crowds have traditionally been less impressive, even in highly realistic titles such as F1 24. To be honest, not many people pay much attention if you’re whizzing past at 200 miles per hour. However, with the advent of the PS5 Pro and PC gaming reaching 8K resolution, low-quality assets are now more noticeable. This can make them stand out and feel incongruous compared to the high realism of their surroundings.
F1 devs vow to improve crowds
In the most recent episode of VideoGamer Podcast, we had a chat with Simon Lumb, the technical producer from F1 24’s development team at Codemasters. He shared that due to advancements in both quality and technology, they are currently focusing on enhancing the ‘furniture’ assets within the game.
As a dedicated enthusiast, I’m constantly grappling with refining the methods of creating realistic crowds – enhancing their appearance, texture, and overall authenticity. This is all encompassed within what we call an ‘authenticity overhaul’.
Lumb mentioned that they aim to enhance the visual appeal of their crowd scenes. There’s potential to leverage advancements in graphics technology, which is continually evolving, to create more visually stunning crowds. So, we discuss this topic frequently, and hopefully, future games will showcase these improvements. With the advent of 8K, the clarity, resolution, and detail in what we can display in crowd scenes significantly increases.
it’s definitely something we talk about and hopefully we see some updates in future titles.

Lumb further elaborated that although enhanced crowds could potentially develop in the future, there are already substantial adjustments made to the in-game barriers to maximize the current high-resolution experience. In simpler terms, he mentioned that they’ve optimized these barriers particularly for 4K visuals, and when you increase it to 8K, you essentially double the resolution.
At a certain distance, it became clear that the fences needed adjustment due to improved visibility. Upon noticing this, our art team inspected and agreed on the necessity for fence modifications. Since there are numerous fences in F1, making these changes can significantly enhance the entire game’s quality and realism.
Although F1 25 is yet to arrive, the PS5 Pro edition of F1 24 definitely takes advantage of the enhanced hardware capabilities of the PS5 Pro. Lumb found PSSR particularly appealing in this year’s game and hinted that this is merely the beginning of an exciting journey delving into the potential of the newer, more powerful technology.
