As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for poignant dramas, I must say that The Outrun has piqued my interest significantly. Having spent a considerable amount of time in recovery myself, I find the premise of this film deeply resonant – the struggle to reconnect with oneself amidst the harsh realities of life, and the search for solace in the most unexpected places.
ComingSoon can exclusively debut the first eight minutes of The Outrun in an extended preview.
Under a new perspective: “The Outrun is helmed by director and co-writer Nora Fingscheidt. Starring Saoirse Ronan, who garnered fame in Lady Bird, this film made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024. Following its premiere, it hit North American theaters in October.
The Outrun is now available to stream on digital services from Sony Home Entertainment.

What is The Outrun about?
Following a ten-year absence in London, 29-year-old Rona (Saoirse Ronan) makes her way back to the Orkney Islands. Struggling with sobriety yet feeling isolated, she strives to bury the past that propelled her on this path of healing. Gradually, the enchanting landscape seeps into her consciousness, and day by day, Rona discovers resilience and optimism in herself amidst the relentless winds and the icy ocean. The Outrun, inspired by the top-selling memoir of Amy Liptrot who collaborated with Fingscheidt on the screenplay, is a raw drama that delves into addiction and recovery.
The movie draws inspiration from Amy Liptrot’s 2016 autobiography of the same title. Both Liptrot and another writer collaborated on the screenplay, with Daisy Lewis providing additional input for the narrative.
In addition to the lead actors, you’ll find Saskia Reeves, Stephen Dillane, Lauren Lyle, Paapa Essiedu, and Izuka Hoyle gracing the screen in this film.
In collaboration with Sarah Brocklehurst, Dominic Norris, and Jack Lowden, Ronan was also involved in the creation of the film. Claudia Yusef, Kieran Hannigan, Maria Logan, Anne Sheehan, Luane Gauer, George Hamilton, James Pugh, and Janina Vilsmaier took on executive producer roles for this project.
Previously, Nora Fingscheidt directed and wrote 2019’s film System Crasher, followed by 2021’s The Unforgivable, featuring Sandra Bullock, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal. On the other hand, you might catch Sara Ronan in Steve McQueen’s Blitz, which is currently showing in selected theaters before it streams on Apple TV+ starting November 22, 2024.
