What is Vanished: The Heather Elvis Case about?

On December 18, 2013, Heather Elvis, a 20-year-old student of cosmetology and waitress from Horry County, South Carolina, didn’t return home after a date. Her car was later found deserted at a boat landing, which was eight miles away from her apartment. Attempts to contact her by phone were unsuccessful, and inquiries made to both her workplaces, including The Tilted Kilt, a popular sports bar known for their ‘Tilted Kilt Girls’, didn’t yield any information. This initiated a state-wide search for Heather’s whereabouts. During the investigation, authorities uncovered a complex love triangle involving an older man named Sidney Moorer and his wife, Tammy. The ensuing arrest and trial of the Moorers brought about a persistent online harassment campaign intended to sway public opinion and disseminate false information about the Elvis family, altering forever how missing persons cases are handled.

This series showcases exclusive conversations with the Elvis family that have never been heard before, conducted by Emmy-winning journalist Summer Dashe who also co-produced the project. The story has previously been highlighted on Dateline, Investigative Discovery, and ABC’s 20/20.

Michael Bayer, creator of True Case Films, stated when the project was unveiled in May 2024 (as reported by Deadline), “Heather’s situation serves as a reminder of how social media can sometimes lead the story astray. The accused exploited social media to influence public sentiment, organizing an online campaign of harassment against Heather’s family. They disseminated conspiracy theories and misinformation.
