A sneak peek of “Search & Destroy,” a fresh take on the classic Dororo manga penned by renowned author Atsushi Kaneko, is set to be unveiled for the first time by ComingSoon from the forthcoming compiled edition.
In a thrilling cyberpunk twist on the classic manga “Dororo” by Osamu Tezuka, introduced in 1967, we have Search & Destroy. The original tale centered around Hyakkimaru, a ronin, and Dororo, an orphaned thief, embarking on exciting journeys together. This captivating narrative led to the production of two anime adaptations, numerous novels, and a live-action movie in 2007.
For the first time in English, the earlier installation of Dororo’s reimagined version, initially serialized from 2019 to 2021, is set for publication starting July 23, 2024. The debut volume of this series, titled “Search & Destroy,” will be released jointly by Fantagraphics and MSX.

Atsushi Kaneko is renowned for his creation of the acclaimed manga “Bambi and Her Pink Gun.” In a fresh take, he transforms Dororo from its feudal Japan roots to a dystopian post-cold-war setting. Here, mercenary robots, referred to as “creatures,” are at the service of the privileged class, while exploiting and harming the urban populace struggling to survive. The demise of one such creature sparks an alliance between Doro, a street thief left orphaned, and a girl disguised in a putrid animal hide, concealing lethal cybernetic enhancements beneath.
As a passionate gamer and avid reader of manga, I can’t help but be captivated by Search & Destroy. This sci-fi masterpiece from recent years stands out with its visually stunning and unique storytelling that sets it apart in any genre or language. Kaneko-sensei has crafted a breathtakingly vivid world, filled with contrasting landscapes that resonate with postwar Cuba as much as Tokyo. The cast of characters is unforgettable – from the scrappy heroes to the skin-crawling monsters – and they take us on an exhilarating ride full of non-stop action and suspense. This modern retelling infuses the rebellious spirit of the original Dororo with the turbulent energy of the 2020s, giving new life to a timeless tale that continues to resonate.
