What is Screams from the Tower about?
“Echoes from the Tower” – A Humorous Gay Coming-of-Age Story
As Grant explains, the film is inspired by John Hughes’ teen comedies.
In a statement regarding the film, Grant explained that “Screams from the Tower” is largely inspired by his adolescent years spent in the Chicago suburbs during the 1990s. His aim was to create a humorous, gay coming-of-age story in the vein of the late John Hughes, who subtly touched upon the idea of being gay in his films while focusing on the struggles of misfits and outcasts. Unlike many other young adult movies that have previously explored themes like trauma and unrequited love among the LGBTQ+ community, Grant wanted to craft a more relatable movie for a wider audience. The story revolves around the peculiar, challenging, and at times amusing process of self-discovery and identity exploration that every teenager experiences before graduating and embarking on new paths in life.
“I wanted to show the generation currently enduring high school the technological and cultural changes which have occurred since I was a kid – not out of nostalgia – but to highlight areas of cultural and social change and the areas which have not. Mostly, I hope they find it funny. I hope they can empathize. I hope they can identify in the same way those who lived it can. Screams from the Tower is a love story, but not a romantic one. This movie is a love letter to an old friend who forever changed my perception of the world. He taught me how to be proud, stranger, and fearless. This movie is in large part, for him and all the ‘weird’ kids out there.”
The shouts from the Tower are set to make their debut on the East Coast this coming Saturday, the 7th of December, at 9:00 PM, specifically at Dances With Films NYC in Regal Union Square. For additional details, please click here.
