EXCLUSIVE: Prithviraj Sukumaran on how Lucifer and Empuraan draw inspiration from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight

At this moment, Prithviraj Sukumaran is overwhelmed with anticipation for his upcoming directorial project, titled L2: Empuraan. Notably, Mohanlal will take the lead role in this movie, which serves as a sequel to the 2019 Malayalam blockbuster thriller, Lucifer. Lately, Sukumaran shared insights about certain elements that bind both films together.

During a unique conversation with TopMob, Prithviraj elaborated on the fact that both Lucifer and L2: Empuraan commence amidst turmoil, only subsequently revealing their respective main characters.

In a somewhat unique manner for many movies, the filmmaker – who was once an actor – admitted that this method relies heavily on the director’s creative vision and their chosen approach to telling the story.

Additionally, he offered an illustration of his favorite superhero film, one that employs a similar structure. Prithviraj referenced Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight series, in which the lead character isn’t always immediately visible but remains a crucial element within each scene.

Prithviraj stated, “The movie creates such an immersive environment that it seems like the main character is always present. Even when he’s not visibly on screen, the ambiance and aura maintain the feeling that you’re watching him, even though he might be off-camera.

He mentioned that both Lucifer and L2: Empuraan draw inspiration from this storytelling technique.

In his continued discourse, Prithviraj expressed, “Just as Murali Gopy, my writer, attempted in Lucifer Part 1, he also aimed for a similar approach in Part 2. The movie initiates amidst turmoil, and it doesn’t take long to comprehend that this disorder could potentially be resolved by the return or reappearance of one significant individual.”

For the unversed, L2: Empuraan is set to release worldwide on March 27, 2025.
