This movie is crafted both in front of and behind the camera by Weam Namou. The talented cast features Sam Rahmani portraying Niran, Zain Shami as Hassina, Ismail Taher as Ali, Natally Boutrus as Mary, Lamar Babi as Matthew, Basim Alameen as Sermad, Amanda Kashat as Nisreen, and Jordyn Kashat as Fatima. Sam Sako is responsible for its production, with Scott Rosenfelt providing oversight in his role as executive producer.
The movie is set against the backdrop of the 2016 U.S. presidential election and narrates the journey of a 20-year-old, liberal Iraqi Muslim refugee who faces challenges in a neighborhood dominated by wealthy, conservative Chaldeans (Iraqi Christians). Niran, our protagonist, is a politically progressive Muslim who prefers stylish hijabs and contemporary clothing. She resides with her family in an area of Detroit, Michigan, often referred to as ‘Little Baghdad’, which has a predominantly Christian Iraqi community. Living right across the street is her adversary, Mary, a politically conservative Christian woman, who displays a Virgin Mary statue in her front yard and a large “Make America Great Again” sign. This is the basic plot summary of the film.
As a gamer, I find myself on a personal journey, wrestling with my identity amidst the apprehensions of deprivation from my family and the obligations to adhere to Muslim traditions. My inspiration comes from Enheduanna, the first known writer in history and an influential priestess from Ancient Mesopotamia. I navigate societal hurdles, challenge cultural prejudices, and above all, yearn to echo my voice across the world. With ambitions to learn, work, and love, I’m rediscovering my life’s mission. Surrounded by powerful, vocal women, I wonder if I can measure up to their expectations while fulfilling my own.
