As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of experience in the industry, I have had the privilege of witnessing some truly exceptional talent grace the silver screen. Among these illustrious names, Mohanlal stands tall as one of the most versatile and dedicated actors India has ever produced. His recent foray into directing with Barroz, a children’s fantasy flick based on a book of the same title, showcases his multifaceted talent and unwavering commitment to storytelling.
More recently, Mohanlal made his return to the cinema world with the film Barroz, a project directed by him and premiered on December 25, 2024 – right in time for Christmas celebrations. This new movie’s debut also brought about an exclusive interview opportunity on TopMob, during which Mohanlal shared exciting updates regarding the long-anticipated Drishyam 3 sequel.
Regarding the film series and its potential sequel, Mohanlal expressed his excitement but also emphasized the challenges involved, saying, “Fans wonder why we’re not making Drishyam 3. The truth is, it isn’t simple. It carries a significant responsibility. It involves much more than just producing a film.
Typically, creating a sequel can be quite difficult due to constant comparisons to the original film. However, there’s been talk about the second movie being excellent, and fans are eagerly asking for a third. Unfortunately, that’s not always possible,” the star explained.
In the end, Mohanlal shared that they are actively working towards producing a third movie in the series. He playfully suggested that anyone with a good storyline or suggestions for the next installment should feel free to share it.

In a recent development, Mohanlal took up the lead role and made his directorial debut with the movie titled “Barroz”. This long-awaited production is a captivating children’s tale adapted from a book bearing the same name, and falls under the genre of fantasy films.
The movie, which unfolds amidst the splendor of the Portuguese monarchy, narrates the story of Barroz, a steadfast lieutenant serving under the Da Gama kings. His superior tasks him with protecting a massive fortune, intended to be handed over to a relative of the Da Gama lineage.
True to his promise, Barroz faithfully protects the treasure for four centuries, transforming into a spiritual caretaker until the arrival of a Da Gama heir. The movie primarily explores how Barroz transfers the treasure and whether he can eventually return to his spirit realm, discharging his obligations.
Beyond just Mohanlal gracing the screen, this film also featured a talented ensemble cast including Maya Rao West, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Nerea Camacho, and Tuhin Menon, among others, all taking on pivotal roles.
In the future, Mohanlal will take on the leading part in Thudarum, sharing the screen with venerable actress Shobana once more. This upcoming movie, helmed by director Tharun Moorthy, presents Mohanlal in a new role as a taxi driver.
Apart from his current role, the actor is set to appear in upcoming movies such as L2: Empuraan, Ram, tentatively named MMMN, and the next project of director Jithu Madhavan, titled Aavesham.
