EXCLUSIVE: Mohanlal reveals why Barroz 3D cannot be remade in other languages, says ‘this is a big challenge’

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for cinematic excellence, I must say that Mohanlal’s directorial debut, Barroz, is a testament to his vast experience and innovative spirit in the world of Malayalam cinema. The film’s unique blend of live-action and animation, coupled with its 3D presentation, makes it a standout piece that should not be remade in other languages due to the intricacies involved in its creation.

Over the festive season on December 25, Mohanlal’s movie titled Barroz graced the cinemas. This was his first attempt at directing a film and garnered favorable responses from the audience. More recently, Mohanlal had an engaging conversation with TopMob, during which he shared insights about the hurdles in shooting Barroz 3D and articulated reasons why it is impossible to replicate this production in different languages.

Mohanlal expressed that this film marks the first attempt by the Malayalam industry since it can only be produced in this unique way. Typically, we remake all films now. With the rise of OTT platforms, when we submit a film to them, it needs to be made in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, or Hindi. However, we don’t release these versions theatrically because the distribution process is quite extensive.

The actor from Drishyam explained his decision to debut Barroz’s 3D version in select theaters. He stated, “I decided to unveil this movie exclusively in 3D format on a limited number of screens because it is designed to be enjoyed in 3D. We indeed have a 2D version available as well. Some wonder, ‘Why make a 2D version after producing a 3D film?’ This production is intended to offer an immersive experience. However, if required, we may also release the 2D version.” He added that crafting and releasing a 3D film requires considerable time and effort.

Mohanlal went into detail about the challenging steps taken to animate the characters for the silver screen. He explained, “We developed animated characters and even sounds for underwater scenes. This is a fresh approach, a unique thought pattern in cinema that others haven’t explored yet.

Creating an authentic animated character who expresses feelings throughout the film is no easy feat – especially when one of them is a goose and the other is fictional. It’s a significant task for the animator to bring these non-existent characters to life emotionally.

During that time, Mohanlal starred as the leading character in the film titled “Barroz.” This is a children’s fantasy movie that shares its name with a book of the same title.
