As a gamer with a penchant for adventure and a soft spot for underdog stories, I am utterly captivated by the trailer for “LookingUp“. The tale of Eitan Armon, a man battling against the odds to conquer El Capitan, resonates deeply with my own experiences. Much like him, I’ve faced challenges that seemed insurmountable, but found ways to push through and persevere.

In her first attempt as a feature film director, Elena Neuman oversees and produces the movie titled LookingUp. The artistic crew includes Dani Tenenbaum, who is in charge of cinematography, Dennis Clark handling editing duties, and mountain cameramen Damian Benegas and Nils Bailey. Additionally, original music for the documentary comes from Michael Bryan Stein.
Eitan, who was diagnosed with a rare, incurable genetic eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), found out about his condition while serving as a sniper in the Israeli Defense Forces. After being medically discharged and retaining only around 5% of his central vision, Eitan decided to take on an incredible challenge – climbing El Capitan in Yosemite. Determined not to let his visual impairment define him, Eitan’s journey shows that life holds endless opportunities for those who approach it with optimism and tenacity. In the film ‘LookingUp’, Eitan learns to relinquish what he can’t control and instead focus on what he can.
Eitan’s tale leads us to an astonishing portaledge perched on El Capitan, a vantage point 1,500 feet above Yosemite Valley. Here, Eitan enjoys peanut butter and takes in the breathtaking view with the little central vision he still has. The film chronicles his journey, showing us how he maneuvers his New York City surroundings using a white cane, consults with medical experts at the University of Iowa, and investigates cutting-edge stem cell retinal transplantation research at the Institute for Vision Research. Along this journey, we observe Eitan forming bonds with other RP patients in more advanced stages of the disease and cultivating a rapport with his climbing guide, Willie, as he masters the techniques required for big wall climbing.
Tickets for the festival showing can now be purchased online.
