Exclusive Karaganda: Red Mafiya Trailer Sets US Premiere at Soho Film Festival

As a cinephile with a keen interest in crime dramas and a soft spot for stories steeped in historical context, I must say the exclusive trailer for Karaganda: Red Mafiya has piqued my curiosity! The film’s pedigree is impressive, with Max Weissberg, an heir to New York’s Gramercy Park Hotel, at the helm. His previous work, such as the 2008 documentary Hotel Gramercy Park and the award-winning short film Karaganda, hint at a rich tapestry of storytelling and authenticity that I’m eager to witness on the big screen.

When is the premiere of Karaganda: Red Mafiya?

The United States debut of the movie “Karaganda: Red Mafiya” will take place at the Village East Angelika Cinema, located at 181-189 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003, on September 22, 2024, which is during the 15th annual Soho International Film Festival. The showing will begin at 4:30 p.m

In the movie, Konstantin Lavysh plays Vladimir, Nikita Bogolyubov takes on the role of Aleksei, Dimiter D. Marinov is cast as Vanya, Natasha Blasick portrays Elena, Richie Stephens acts as Lyosha, and Alexander Karavay appears as Monya

The story unfolds in the secretive world of the Vory v Zakonye, an ancient criminal organization traced back to imperial Russia. In this narrative, we follow Vladimir, a Russian mafia figure during the 1990s. A bloody gunfight at a Russian airbase propels him into a lethal gangster war, causing him to reconnect with an old friend from their Soviet prison days. This meeting kick-starts a perilous odyssey aimed at rescuing his wife who is held captive within the ruthless Soviet correctional system

Previously, Weissberg shared some parts of the story of Karaganda and its Red Mafiya in a 2008 documentary titled Hotel Gramercy Park, from a non-fiction standpoint. This story was further developed from Weissberg’s 2014 short film Karaganda, which garnered five awards among 26 festivals

“Weissberg expressed his excitement about unveiling this film to the public after over a decade of dedication. With the global circumstances today, Karaganda: Red Mafiya seems particularly significant, which adds extra importance to its U.S. debut at the Soho Film Festival.”

In collaboration with Nina Gortinski and Edwin Mejia Jr., Weissberg is involved in the film’s production. Meanwhile, Sameer Dua, Bryce Campbell, and Ego Mikitas take on the roles of executive producers, and George Hume and Gregory Oelke serve as co-producers for this project
