Upendra Interview

1. UI The Movie, marks your return to writing and directing a film after 2015’s Uppi 2. While the latter was an allegorical movie which was more of a psychological treat, this seems different. How did you approach the film and what led you back to directing a film?

To be honest, I’m not sure about that. A while ago, there was a concept I wanted to develop, but at the same moment, I was occupied with other projects, including films. Whenever we found some spare time, my colleagues and I would brainstorm film ideas. It was during one of these sessions that I got the chance to meet Sreekanth KP and GP Manohar, the producers of a certain movie.

In our recent conversation, we delved into the idea of User Interface (UI), specifically this particular project. As our discussion drew to a close, it sparked an idea within us – we decided to embark on this very project right then and there. That’s how we embarked on creating UI for this specific project.

2. From the trailer of UI, we can see that the film is not just a typical dystopian sci-fi action movie with your character even appearing as a dictator in a menacing world. Is the film giving a satirical point-of-view on current world problems and how it could affect us in the future?

As a die-hard fan, let me tell you, this movie is a masterpiece! It’s got depth upon depth, from its social and political commentaries to its psychological and philosophical explorations. It resonates with everyone, offering layers that allow each viewer to find their unique connection. This film is so multifaceted that it can be experienced in countless ways, making every viewing a new adventure!

3. Contemporary Kannada cinema has been flourishing at a pan-Indian level, be it KGF with Yash or Rishab Shetty with Kantara. How much of an impact do you feel future Kannada cinema has to offer to the whole of Indian or world cinema?

Ans. As a dedicated follower of the art world, I don’t claim to predict or judge the future. What I can share is that numerous storytellers and filmmakers are experimenting with diverse genres in their productions. Furthermore, there’s a steady stream of new talent emerging within the industry as well.

I’m hoping that this chance for local movies to capture significant interest on such a grand scale persists in the days ahead as well.

4. Usually in social media, we could see people discussing your film characters exhibiting manly or alpha male kind of characters and being loved for it. Do you feel such characters would employ well today when everything is scrutinized for political correctness?

Ans. Here’s one thing to note: The ‘alpha male’ trait in this context doesn’t stem from a psychological or philosophical foundation. If you’ve watched the movie Upendra, you’d grasp that it’s not solely about portraying an alpha male character.

The story delves into deeper psychological and philosophical realms, and it’s in these layers that the three additional female characters of the movie become significant. This could be one reason why the film resonated with audiences initially and continues to do so.

5. The trailer of UI was much-loved by Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan who was in complete awe after watching it. How was that interaction in its entirety?

Answer: Truth be told, I was on cloud nine. I hadn’t anticipated Aamir Khan creating a video after watching the UI trailer I presented. My intention was simply to share it with him for an honest reaction. Upon seeing it, he pulled out his phone and recorded that video despite our limited time together.

I’m left utterly bewildered by it; I can’t seem to find the right words to express my gratitude towards him. Despite his fame as a prominent figure in our field, he always takes time to motivate and support up-and-coming artists like myself.
