First released in 2003, “Behind the Red Door” was directed by Matia Karrell and jointly written with C.W. Cressler. In addition to Sedgwick and Sutherland, the cast includes Stockard Channing, Chuck Shamata, Hannah Lochner, Corey Staden, Phillip Craig, Jason Carter, and Laura Press.
Initially, the movie aired on the Showtime network, which had a multi-year agreement with Viacom at the time. The film tackled HIV/AIDS-related themes, and it was generally well-received by viewers.
Natalie, a gifted photographer, faces financial hardships in New York City until her agent, Julia, secures her a $20,000 job in Boston. Unbeknownst to her, the client is none other than her long-lost brother, Roy, whom she hasn’t seen for a decade. Despite their strained past, Natalie decides to stay for Roy’s birthday and learns that he has AIDS. As they spend his remaining days together, their previously sour relationship evolves into a heartwarming bond, as old grudges are replaced by deep affection.
