What is Neon’s 2073 movie about?
In the year 2073, as we’ve sadly anticipated, our worst modern apprehensions have come to fruition. Swarms of surveillance drones darken the skies of a charred orange hue, and heavily armed police patrol the ravaged cityscapes. Beneath the surface, survivors cling to the fading memories of a time that was once free and optimistic. In this compelling blend of futuristic science fiction and speculative realism, esteemed filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Amy) invites us on a journey to a future eerily echoing our present’s ominous portents. Two-time Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton (In America, Sweet and Lowdown, Minority Report) embodies a survivor tormented by harrowing glimpses of the past—a past that is, ironically, our present. Footage from today’s world seamlessly weaves together, shedding light on the interconnected crises of authoritarianism, unregulated technology, inequality, and global climate change. 2073 serves as a stark, haunting depiction of a dystopian future that could be our own reality.
2073 is inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 hybrid sci-fi/documentary film, La Jetée, which narrates the story of a time traveler endeavoring to alter the trajectory of human events.
Kapadia collaborates with George Chignell on a production titled “Lafcadia Productions’ 2073.” Tom Quinn, Dan O’Meara, Emily Thomas, Dana O’Keefe, Emily Selinger, Ollie Madden, Farhana Bhula, Nicole Stott, Chris King, Eric Sloss, and John Sloss are listed as executive producers. Double Agent, NEON, and Film4 also contribute to the project as executive producers and co-financiers.
2037, which had its debut at the Venice Film Festival, is set to hit selected theaters across the USA on December 27, 2024.
