As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I find myself deeply troubled by the ongoing saga at Bungie. I have fond memories of Marathon, a game that Chris Barrett played a significant role in creating. His sudden departure from the company, followed by the allegations against him, has left many of us questioning what really happened behind closed doors.
Previously this year, Christopher Barrett, a veteran developer at Bungie known for his role in Marathon, was unexpectedly dismissed from the company after an internal probe into accusations of misconduct towards multiple women within the studio. Now, Barrett has initiated a lawsuit against Sony and Bungie, claiming that he was let go to prevent him from receiving a $45 million payment that was due to him.
Today on X, Chris Barrett publicly declared a lawsuit against Sony and Bungie. In his statement, he disputes the reasons for his termination. Previously reported as being dismissed due to inappropriate interactions with at least eight female colleagues, Barrett claims these circumstances are not accurate. He has had to deal with unwarranted rumors, character assassinations, and insinuations about what truly led to his dismissal after 25 years of dedicated service.
The lawsuit further asserts that Bungie experienced chaos after its sale to Sony for $3.6 billion, with one claim being Barrett was owed a $45 million payout post-acquisition. However, it’s alleged that accusations against him were falsified, allowing Bungie to blame internal issues on him and evade the payment by doing so.
Earlier this year, Chris Barrett was let go from Bungie, with Joe Ziegler stepping in to take over as director of the Marathon project. Lately, Ziegler has shared that the development process is progressing smoothly and he’s planning playtests for 2025.
