Prior to the release of Sonic the Hedgehog movie series and The Last of Us on HBO, most video game movies were subpar. Alongside the entertaining yet rough Resident Evil films, we often had to endure duds like Uwe Boll’s entire filmography and disappointing films such as Max Payne. However, in 2016, there was a change with Warcraft – a movie based on Blizzard’s famous RTS-turned-MMO franchise.
On the Grit Podcast as reported by Eurogamer, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick shared his thoughts on the movie adaptation, stating that he found it not just disappointing, but one of the worst films he had ever encountered in his experience.

In the interview, Kotick admitted his limited role in the making of the Warcraft film, which was initially intended to kick off a movie trilogy. Although there are some supporters of the movie (including myself, though I’d rather not discuss), it has predominantly been criticized as a mediocre production in terms of filmmaking quality.

Kotick pointed out that Blizzard’s participation in the movie project was detracting significantly from their progress in the gaming realm. With the creative team focusing on the movie, game development pace decelerated, and there was a lack of new content releases.
Regarding his opinion about the movie, he stated that it was “absolutely poor,” or “I found it to be among the poorest films I’ve ever watched.
Although Warcraft might not have been a critically acclaimed film, it was crafted with genuine passion, and for those attached to the franchise, there are instances of true excellence. Nonetheless, it’s widely disliked, so my praise may seem unjustified. Still, I’m content that the movie was made and brought to life.
