Everything to know about Netflix horror movie The Deliverance

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast with over two decades of scaring myself senseless under my belt, I must say that the upcoming release of Lee Daniels’ “The Deliverance” has me absolutely thrilled! With a powerhouse cast like Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, and the inimitable Tasha Smith, this film promises to be a chilling tale of terror that will keep us on the edge of our seats.

Renowned filmmaker Lee Daniels, who has been nominated for an Oscar, is mostly recognized for directing movies like “Precious,” “The Paperboy,” “The Butler,” and “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” Additionally, he co-created the TV series “Empire” and “Star.” Now, he’s venturing into a new genre – horror – with his upcoming film titled “The Deliverance.” This movie is set to debut on Netflix on August 30, 2024, while it will also have a limited theatrical release on August 16, 2024.

In January 2022, we became aware that Netflix had acquired The Deliverance for a substantial $65 million, having emerged victorious in a fierce bidding battle. It was subsequently disclosed that Daniels would be directing the supernatural horror film, which he co-wrote with David Coggeshall, Elijah Bynum, and Thomas Westfall.

I later found out that I would be the one bringing Tucker Tooley on board for production through Tooley Entertainment, with Lee Daniels Entertainment handled by Daniels and Pam Williams. Additionally, Jackson Nguyen and Todd Crites from Turn Left Productions were also involved. As executive producers, we had Greg Renker, Hilary Shor, Gregoire Gensollen, and Jackie Shenoo joining us in this exciting endeavor.

Drawing from real-life events, the narrative of “The Deliverance” revolves around a mother and her children who face a terrifying ordeal when they uncover that an evil spirit has taken up residence in their newly acquired home, compelling them to battle for their lives.

Here’s the official logline via Netflix:

Inspired by a terrifying true story, a mother fights for her life, her faith, and the souls of her children after discovering their new home is haunted by a demonic presence.

Andra Day, who won a Golden Globe Award, takes on the central role of Ebony Jackson, a hardworking single mother facing challenges. She is recognized for her previous performance in the biographical drama film “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” where she portrayed the lead character Billie Holiday, collaborating with Daniels on this project.

In addition to her, notable actors like Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor are also part of the cast in The Deliverance.

It’s strongly advised that you watch this movie without young children present. Either wait for them to go to bed or keep them busy with age-appropriate films or television shows. You might find it difficult to concentrate once the movie starts.
