Everything to know about Monster season 3 starring Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein

As someone who has binge-watched every season of “Monster” since its inception, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming third installment! The decision to have Charlie Hunnam play Ed Gein is simply genius. He’s proven his ability to embody complex characters with chilling precision, and I have no doubt he will bring the Butcher of Plainfield to life in a way that will send shivers down our spines.

After the extraordinary audience engagement of “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” when it premiered on Netflix in September 2022, the streaming platform decided to extend this controversial series about notorious killers for not just one but two more seasons.

Two years after the initial announcement, the first part of the two-season series titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” was released in September 2024. Consistent with its predecessor, this new series focusing on the Menendez brothers has been met with criticism for its depiction of the storyline and certain creative choices made during production.

Moving forward with the second part of the two-season order, Netflix has officially unveiled that season 3 will focus on a specific killer. The character will be portrayed by an actor or actress yet to be named. Although more details about Monster Season 3 are forthcoming, here’s what fans have learned so far!

Charlie Hunnam will play Ed Gein

On September 17, exactly two days before the premiere of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” Netflix revealed that Charlie Hunnam is set to play serial killer Ed Gein in season 3 of “Monster.” While at the Los Angeles premier of “Lyle and Erik,” producer Murphy announced this thrilling casting news.

Ed Gein, famously known as the Grave Robber of Plainfield, was responsible for the gruesome murders of at least two women before his apprehension in 1957. His morbid hobbies included exhuming bodies from their graves and preserving their bones and skin as mementos. Essentially, it’s a chilling true account that could have been penned for a horror story in America. Monster season 3 is set to be a historical depiction of the 1950s, promising an extremely graphic and gory portrayal.

Before the formal declaration that Gein would star in season 3, whispers started circulating that John Wayne Gacy might have been the show’s choice. This potential subject had been hinted at in season 1 and shared a link with Dahmer. Yet, those rumors proved unfounded – for now, unless there are any subsequent seasons of Monster down the line.

Hunnam hasn’t worked with Murphy before in any of his past shows, but the Sons of Anarchy star will definitely deliver another aptly chilling performance for the anthology series. Once filming gets underway, Netflix will surely release a first-look photo of Hunnam in character.

We’ll share more updates about Hunnam and additional casting as they’re announced!

Filming begins in October 2024

According to the announcement on Tudum by Netflix for season 3 of Monster, it’s stated that production will kick off next month. Given that the announcement was made in September, this implies that filming will commence around October 2024.

As a gamer, I’m excited to share that the second season was filmed from March to July 2024, which roughly equates to four action-packed months of production. The anticipation builds as we gear up for season 3, with filming expected to span the remainder of 2024 and stretch into early 2025. If all goes according to plan, we might wrap up filming around February 2025. Once that happens, the post-production process will keep us busy right through the spring!

It’s possible that Season 3 of “Monster” might debut as early as summer 2025, but historically, its previous seasons have been released in September. This pattern of releasing the series in September may continue based on past releases by Netflix.

Release Prediction: Late Summer or Fall 2025
