Everybody Hates Chris is returning (in a completely new way!)

As someone who was navigating the treacherous waters of junior high during the debut of the original “Everybody Hates Chris“, I can confidently say that the return of this beloved series as an animated sitcom is a welcome blast from the past. While my own hair might be a bit grayer now, the struggles and laughter of Chris and his family still resonate deeply.

Approximately twenty years ago, there was a commercial for comedian Chris Rock’s live-action autobiographical comedy series called Everybody Hates Chris. In the ad, Rock imagined what it would be like to be a teenager. Now, this show is coming back, but this time as an animated sitcom. According to TVLine, it has a scheduled premiere date.

The Instagram post from Everybody Still Hates Chris features the main characters sitting in a diner identical to the one seen in the last episode of Everybody Hates Chris.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the freshly conceived comedy series is bringing back Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold reprising their roles as Julius and Rochelle, much like they did in the beloved show “Everybody Hates Chris” (2005-2009). This time around, Chris Rock will lend his voice to the narration, reminiscing about his life as a skinny kid from a hardworking family in 1980s Brooklyn, New York.

This time, in the live-action comedy series, Tim Johnson Jr. from “Saturdays” will lend his voice as Young Chris, alongside Ozioma Akagha who will voice Chris’ younger sister Tonya. Terrence Little Gardenhigh will provide the voice for Chris’s younger brother Drew, and Gunnar Sizemore, known for his role in “Kung Fu Panda,” will voice Chris’ only friend Greg.

Since I started attending junior high school around the same time “Everybody Hates Chris” initially aired, there’s a good chance the show could be successful like it was back then. However, it’s important to note that the series premiered nearly 20 years ago.

The TV show “Everybody Hates Chris” debuted during a period when many were shaping their memories in middle school. Future generations may find similar resonance, but this revamped version is aimed at those who previously watched and matured with the original series. The Instagram post from “Everybody Still Hates Chris” has inspired other animated programs that center around family dynamics and working-class life experiences.
