Recently, Gemma Chan has talked about potentially reprising her character Sersi within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after ‘Eternals‘. During an interview for her upcoming movie ‘The Actor’, she addressed rumors of a possible comeback but confessed that actors are usually the last to find out about future productions. This conversation has led to more chatter concerning the destiny of the Eternals characters and their incomplete story arcs within the MCU.
Gemma Chan is ‘keeping faith’ for Sersi’s return in Marvel
During an interview with ComicBook, Gemma Chan, who played Sersi in Eternals, hinted at the possibility of reprising her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She expressed, “It’s always a mystery. We’re usually the last to know. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I believe there’s more story to be told, but I remain hopeful.
In November 2021, Chloé Zhao’s movie Eternals made its debut, introducing an innovative group of immortal superheroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite boasting a star-studded cast that includes Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Kit Harington, the film garnered mixed opinions from critics. It became the first MCU movie to receive a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned $402 million globally.
Last year, Marvel Studios made it clear that there were no imminent plans for an Eternals sequel (according to Inverse). However, elements from the original movie have surfaced in Captain America: Brave New World, such as the discovery of adamantium on Celestial Island, a landmass that emerged from Tiamut. Despite this connection, no characters from the Eternals were present in Captain America: Brave New World.
The after-scene snippets of The Eternals hint at potential upcoming plots, such as Dane Whitman’s metamorphosis into Black Knight and the debut of Harry Styles portraying Eros, Thanos’ sibling. However, Marvel has not yet officially announced any projects linked to these characters. Kevin Feige, in reference to a recent trailer for Brave New World, implied, “There are hints, I believe you may have noticed from a recently released trailer, that acknowledge certain events. Some colossal creatures emerged from the sea.
It seems possible that characters from Eternals might reappear in future collaborative movies such as Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, given that “anyone” from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s past may show up in those productions, according to directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
