In my perspective, the artistry of Esteban Raheem Abdul Raheem Samayoa exudes a deep authenticity that resonates with me. His creations, spanning from dreamy airbrush and charcoal masterpieces to rugged ceramics and multimedia works, all seem to breathe life into tales of nostalgia and fortitude. Each piece he creates shines with its own unique iridescence.
After presentations at Good Mother Gallery and pt.2, Samayoa is preparing for “Blood Be Water,” his upcoming exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art San José (ICA San José). In this first institutional solo show, the Oakland-based artist honors the influences that have molded him: muralist aesthetics, his Mexican-Guatemalan roots, and the community who supported him throughout his journey.
The title “Blood Be Water” challenges the notion that family ties are stronger than other relationships, instead emphasizing the strength of community and chosen family. Drawing on ancestral connections, fleeting memories, and the fluidity of identity, Samayoa’s work is a testament to the diverse lineages and personal experiences that have shaped him.
As a gamer, I’m inspired by the tale of turning water into wine – a symbol of transformation as a divine power. I feel we craft from passion and necessity, and creation is my constant in this ever-evolving universe. Every twist and turn, every redirection, is simply part of adapting as an artist. I trust that my work will resonate with people, giving me the strength to carry on and move forward each day.
I wish for people to show more empathy and kindness towards each other. The making of ‘Blood be Water’ was a beautiful collaboration, made possible by the love and faith in my vision from my community. I believe it’s crucial that people recognize the potential achievements we can accomplish when working together. Although it feels like my time now, I look forward to the moment when I can repay this support and continue to spread this message.
The exhibition will be on view from March 22 through August 24.
