Escape from Tarkov’s Tripwire Explained

Escape from Tarkov's Tripwire Explained

As a seasoned Escape from Tarkov player with over 500 hours under my belt, I can confidently say that the Tripwire is one of the most cunning and devious tools in this brutal game. I’ve had more than a few encounters where these little wires have turned the tide in my favor, or better yet, made me jump out of my seat with a heart-stopping scare.

The Tripwire is one of the more devious contraptions in any Escape from Tarkov player’s arsenal. A simple wire attached to a grenade that can be placed wherever you want has the potential for carnage and will induce paranoia for any PMC trying to do tasks in peace. In this handy little guide, we’ll explain how to unlock them, how to use them, and what strategies you can employ to get the most out of them.

How to unlock Tripwires

To activate Tripwires, first, you’ll have to complete two tasks: “Rough Tarkov” and “A Truth Every Hunter Knows”, both of which become accessible once you’ve met Jaeger, following your introduction by the Mechanic.

Tarkov” requests you to identify mine locations within Ground Zero and Woods. Your task is merely to pinpoint their positions, not to worry about escaping safely. In Woods, the mines are situated near the USEC Camp in the northwest region of the map. The mines are distributed around the western and northwestern areas surrounding the camp, so it’s best to avoid those spots.

In the Tarbank building, tucked away at the back in a small alcove, you’ll find the mine situated near the booth. This booth is noticeable due to a machine gun mounted on its second level, aimed at the Terragroup building. To locate it more easily, follow the graffiti along the hallway until you spot an open door at the end. However, be cautious as merely viewing the mine accomplishes your goal; venturing into the room could lead to dangerous consequences.

As a fellow enthusiast, I’d like to share a tip: “Every Hunter Knows This” hints at checking out the Factory and Customs areas to discover ideal spots for Tripmines. The one in Factory is tucked away on the third floor of the breakroom or office building inside the factory, specifically in the breach room. This room is adjacent to the office, and you’ll need to use the breach option to access it through the door.

To complete this task, you’ll need to journey to a three-story dormitory located towards the north on the map. Ascend the central staircase within the building to reach the second floor. Keep in mind that these dorms are often contested, so if you don’t intend to fight your way through for loot, it’s best to rush in, mark the quest as complete, and make a quick exit.

After completing the quest you’ll be able to purchase Tripwire installation kits from Jaeger.

How to use Tripwires

To set up a Tripwire, first, make sure to slot your Tripwire Installation Kit into your special equipment (you won’t lose it even if you die). Next, pick any grenade with a pin. Place this grenade in your inventory and press the “B” key (default binding). Now, you can position the Tripwire on any flat surface, and it will activate when someone steps onto it. The explosion time varies depending on the grenade type, but many players prefer impact grenades due to their quick detonation.

The best ways to use Tripwires

Using impact grenades might be the surest to secure kills but is also the most expensive. But the Tripwire is useful for more than securing instant kills. You could get a cheap smoke or stun grenade just for the scare effect alone. If you place the Tripwire in a dark corridor after shooting all the lights out, like D2 underneath Reserve, it will cause your unsuspecting victims to sprint down that corridor without checking their corners. They also work as a makeshift alarm system or as an alternative way to secure buildings while looting.
