As a seasoned gamer with countless hours logged in the harsh world of Escape from Tarkov, I can confidently say that navigating Ground Zero is like stepping into a battle-hardened veteran’s boots. The map may be straightforward, but the combat is anything but.
As a fresh recruit in Escape from Tarkov, Ground Zero will likely be your first destination. This place is jam-packed with beginner missions and serves as an excellent introduction to many of the game’s fundamental mechanics. However, beware! You’ll be going up against seasoned veterans, and combat here can be over in a heartbeat. To help you navigate this challenging terrain, I’ve gathered some essential tips to ensure you’re well-prepared before you step onto the map.
Navigation
Navigating Ground Zero is quite straightforward. A principal road stretches from south to north, with structures on both sides – west and east – and a parking lot beneath. You’ll either start near one of the buildings or in the parking lot, and Scavs often appear along the central street as well as the small park in front of the TerraGroup building. The majority of objectives are typically found in the map’s northern region, particularly the TerraGroup building. So, it’s best to avoid that area unless you’re seeking a confrontation.
Loot
Although Ground Zero isn’t the most profitable map, it’s still a place you shouldn’t overlook. Scattered throughout this map are gray suitcases and deceased individuals that could potentially drop valuable loot and resources. Furthermore, every office building contains various types of crates, making it worth your while to search for attachments and other useful items.
Exits
Six escape routes are positioned at the boundaries of Ground Zero. Since they’re all out in the open, remember to verify your perimeter before attempting an extraction.
Nakatani Basement Stairs
The Nakatani Basement Stairs are situated in the southeastern part of the map, diagonally opposite the Capital Insight building. You can reach them by stepping inside the Nakatani building, then making your way down the hallway before descending the stairs. It’s a relatively secure exit, but be aware that both Scavs and PMCs use this route.
Police Checkpoint
At the eastern edge of the map, you’ll find the Police Checkpoint exit, sandwiched between TerraGroup and Empire structures. This is Ground Zero’s sole vehicle departure point. To utilize it, each player (whether solo or in a team) must fork over 5,000 rubles. Following payment, there’s a compulsory 60-second wait for the extraction. Given its exposed location, consider camouflaging by hiding amidst cars during this period. Important note: This exit can only be used once per game session.
Scav Checkpoint
At Ground Zero, the Scav Checkpoint is where a PMC (Player’s Mercenary Character) and another player, acting as a Scav, must journey towards the northeastern section of the map, specifically the street that stretches past the TerraGroup parking garage. This location can be challenging to reach because it involves building trust with the Scav through voice communication (VOIP), ensuring both players arrive there safely.
Emmercom Checkpoint
The Emmercom Checkpoint exit is located near the medical tent in the northwestern part of the map. It’s easily accessible but exposed. PMCs and Scavs share this exit and it’s one of the few spots on the map that spawns medical supplies so be careful.
Mira Ave
Mira Avenue serves as a unique extraction spot situated in the map’s western region. During each raid, a flare will appear at this location on someone’s body near the exit. To indicate an upcoming extraction, it’s crucial to fire the flare after the screen prompt appears. This visual cue alerts everyone about your intentions to leave. The path leading to the tram for extraction is quite open, so moving swiftly along this route is advisable to minimize exposure.
Streets of Tarkov
The single transit access point at Ground Zero, known as Streets of Tarkov, lies in the map’s westernmost region, near the truck barricade adjacent to the Mira Ave extraction site. This exit can only be used during Marathon Mode and allows you to unload some of your loot before moving to the Streets of Tarkov area. Given its open layout, it’s crucial to ensure that no one is observing before using it.
