ESA expects Trump tariffs to have ‘real and detrimental impact’ on video game industry

On the very same day, the long-awaited in-depth unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 took place, Donald Trump also declared new tariffs set to take effect across America. These tariffs have been a source of worry since his election, and now, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has expressed their view that these tariffs may cause significant harm to the video game industry.

Information from ESA Senior Vice President Aubrey Quinn was featured in Stephen Totilo’s Game File newsletter. On Wednesday, President Donald Trump declared the tariffs he had pledged. Among them were a 34% tariff on China, 24% on Japan, 25% on South Korea, and an impressive 46% on Vietnam. Quinn warns that these tariffs could cause significant damage to the industry in the short term.

Later on, Aubrey Quinn expressed his viewpoint that the matter of American tariffs is still very much an ongoing topic.

After Nintendo Switch 2’s price was revealed, there was a great deal of conversation about this topic. Many people felt that both the console’s cost and additional games like Mario Kart World were quite expensive. It’s possible, though not confirmed, that the prolonged discussion and uncertainty surrounding tariffs in recent months may have influenced the final announced price.

It appears that the European Space Agency (ESA) has expressed its position regarding the U.S.’s current economic strategies. As we keep an eye on how the tariffs affect the industry, make sure to check back with Shacknews for further developments.
