In the heat of season 6’s ninth episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” it was my gaming world that unveiled Commander Joseph Lawrence’s heartbreaking end, a key figure in my journey towards revolution. Just moments before the grand finale, the storyline unfurled the grandiose schemes of the handmaids’ vengeance as they seized control of Gilead, a land once controlled by oppressors like him.
Does Commander Joseph Lawrence die in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 9?
Fans have long speculated if Bradley Whitford’s character, Commander Lawrence, would meet his end before the finale on the Hulu series. However, in the second-to-last episode, the commander makes the selfless decision to give up his life to aid the handmaids’ rebellion.
In response to Mark and June’s pleading, Commander Joseph Lawrence decided to undertake a self-sacrificing operation. This involved placing a bomb on a plane destined for Washington D.C., where all remaining commanders were scheduled to fly. June cautioned him to set the explosive before the other commanders reached Bedford airport.
According to the schedule, June took Lawrence to the airport and commended his bravery, saying enthusiastically, “Valor suits you well, Joseph.” The leader promised June he’d do his best to avoid any mistakes.
Nevertheless, unlike other commanders such as Wharton, Lawrence wasn’t able to disembark from the airplane upon arrival at the airport. Instead, he stepped onto the plane with a premonition that it would detonate in mid-flight. Just before boarding, Lawrence made a touching gesture towards June, placing his hand over his heart. In this instant, the character portrayed by Elizabeth Moss understood that Lawrence was preparing to give up his life for the purpose of liberating Gilead on behalf of the handmaids’ mission.
Lawrence’s final chat was with Nick Blaine, who decided to get on the doomed plane just before takeoff. Unbeknownst to him, the bomb, Nick informed Lawrence, had now placed him among the “victors”.
In our recent conversation, we spoke of June, and Max Minghella’s character shared a poignant revelation – that June had often urged him to depart from Gilead. In a chilling finale, the commander imparted his ominous parting words, saying to me, “You should have heeded her advice.
In simpler terms, during a conversation, Bradley Whitford interpreted the last scene between Lawrence and June, where he touched his chest, as a gesture similar to a military salute. He felt it symbolized a commander acknowledging a revolutionary who was about to grant freedom to a suppressed nation.
Whitford shared with Elle, “That instance when Lizzie seemed certain of herself was indeed significant, she recognized it as such. This isn’t false modesty; it’s a matter of desperation. You never truly know what will work – honestly, you don’t. But I have faith in her judgment.
