Eric Dane confirms his return for Euphoria season 3 and shares what Cal likely won't be up to

As a longtime Euphoria fan who’s seen my fair share of rollercoasters in life, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation about season 3. The drama behind the scenes is one thing, but the return of our beloved characters, including the enigmatic Cal Jacobs, is another!

There’s been a great deal of excitement circulating about the potential third season of Euphoria. A significant portion of this discussion revolves around the production’s off-screen turmoil, but there are other aspects that enthusiasts and curious onlookers are delving into. Notably, it has been confirmed that the main cast of this popular HBO series will be coming back. This includes Eric Dane reprising his role as Cal Jacobs, Nate’s father who secretly filmed himself and his intimate partners, and stored a growing collection of these videos in his office. Among these videos was one featuring Jules.

At the end of season 2, Cal left his wife and their two children behind. For years, he had hidden his true feelings, which resulted in significant emotional and anger problems for his sons. Tired of maintaining the “ideal” lifestyle, he chose to walk away from it all. When Nate later found his father residing on one of his construction sites with strangers, it appeared that Cal was determined to live life according to his own rules.

Despite Nate initially seeming ready to confront his father with a gun, it became clear that he wanted to discuss how badly Cal had wronged him and had contacted the police instead. Instead of using physical force against his father, Nate opted to expose Cal’s criminal activities as a means of retaliation. In season 3, we can expect to uncover more details about this tense situation and the ongoing storyline of Cal’s troubled life.

According to reports, the story is set to advance significantly, with enough time having elapsed for the teen characters to have graduated from high school and be navigating their way through young adulthood. This could potentially mean we’ll rejoin them when they are in their twenties. Regarding the adult characters we’ve grown accustomed to, including Cal, this development implies they will also be in different stages of life.

On David Spade’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, as reported by Variety, Eric Dane expressed his happiness that the show might return because he had been optimistic about it. However, it seems unlikely that Cal will be returning to prison, as Dane explicitly asked for a different starting point for his character’s continuation.

The first thing I said to Sam [Levinson] when we wrapped season 2 was, ‘I don’t want to be behind bars.’ So I’m almost 100% certain that I’m not behind bars…Anything else that follows I’m fine with.

As a fervent admirer, if Levison adheres to that demand, it leaves a vast landscape unexplored regarding Cal’s life post-arrest, with his family ties seemingly strained. What transpired in those years? Was he consumed by the same chaotic lifestyle, succumbed to hidden demons, or managed to transform into a less morally questionable figure? Time will tell, but we can anticipate something intriguing, possibly shocking, and certainly unpredictable.
