As a dedicated WWE fan, I couldn’t help but echo the sentiments of Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff when he critiqued John Cena’s first promo after his surprising heel turn. Last week, the scene was set as John Cena made his long-awaited comeback to WWE programming since his shocking transformation at Elimination Chamber: Toronto.
Swiftly, he tackled his actions, which encompassed a violent assault on the reigning WWE Champion, Cody Rhodes. Cena lashed out at the spectators, leveling accusations of long-term mistreatment against him.
Instead of categorizing himself as either a “babyface” or a “heel,” Cena emphasized that he is simply a person who has been treated unfairly for a long time. To clarify his position, Cena stated unequivocally that neither the fans nor anyone else could expect any changes in his appearance or theme.
Showing off his villainous side built up over many years, John Cena responded harshly when a young fan expressed their affection from the sidelines. Ignoring both the child and the WWE audience, Cena conveyed that they held no significance for him, making it clear he was indifferent to their support.
During Cena’s speech, he was attempting to solidify his fresh, antagonistic character, yet responses varied. Some admired the audacity, but Eric Bischoff found the promo shallow and lacking in emotional intensity.
Eric Bischoff calls John Cena’s WWE promo ‘weak’
83 Weeks featured Eric Bischoff discussing John Cena’s initial heel promo. He acknowledged the buzz surrounding Cena’s transformation, yet found it underwhelming in terms of impact. Bischoff explained, “The anticipation was there, John Cena going heel, what a moment! But the presentation lacked any real drama other than the fact that he went heel… The delivery was strong, but the content was somewhat lacking for such an important occasion.” [Credit: WrestlingInc]
He too thought that Cena should adapt his image to suit his fresh villain persona, but he maintained that WWE made a wise decision by not altering it. In his opinion, modifying Cena’s appearance excessively, too soon, might have seemed insincere.

In simple terms this week, Cena reiterated his criticism towards the fans, promising to undermine their love for wrestling by relinquishing his WWE Championship title. The following week, he’ll have his last performance before WrestleMania 41, and it will be intriguing to see what he has in store with his upcoming statements.
